Let Us Build a World of Peace through living for the sake of others

Distinguished Tr

leaders from the

United States! Respected political

and financial leaders

from the Republic of Korea, ladies

and gentlemen, I welcome you with

all my heart to this banquet. As a person

who has lived his whole life following

a standard of absolute values

centered on God, I have prepared this

banquet to invite your interest in

some recent projects.

The human desire to achieve the

ideal of peace has been consistent

throughout history. Yet eternal peace

has never been manifested. This is the

problem. Human beings have lived in

ignorance, chaos, division and strife.

To this day, we have been unable to

establish an absolute value system

that can be shared by all people. An

absolute value system cannot arise

from human beings who harbor internal

conflicts and are always changing.

The root of this system can only be

found in God, the Absolute Being and

the Creator. God, who is the essence

of love, created human beings to be

the recipient of his absolute love. One

cannot claim for oneself the status of

owner or master of love, and that is

true even for God. Only one’s partner

grants that status. This is a fundamental

principle. One needs to live for

one’s partner and neighbor. This absolute

value system of love stands

above any political ideal or principle

of economics. It is the heavenly law

that transcends all ages.

What kind of being is God who

created this universe and the heavenly

laws? God has manifested himself

in the universe as the

quintessence of living for the sake of

others. Though he is the king of

knowledge, he does not ask us to

come to him through knowledge.

Though he is the owner and king of

power, authority, money and material,

he does not view these as conditions

to come before him. God says that

anyone can come to his side as long as

they live for the sake of others. Only

those who live for others can become

the counterpart of the center, and

stand in the position of a central figure.

God is not an egocentric dictator.

Rather, God invests himself for humankind’s

sake. Thus, for tens of

thousands of years our original minds

have sought to follow God.

All beings must exist for the sake of

other beings in order to maintain their

place in this universe, as governed by

the laws of heaven. The principle of

living for the sake of others has been

valid throughout all ages and in all

nations. An egocentric and self-centered

way of life will bring about evil,

while a life of living for the greater

good will bring prosperity. All things

can be brought into harmony by living

for greater goodness. This opens

all doors to individuals, families,

tribes, races, nations, the world and

heaven.

The self-evident truth of the benefit

of living for the sake of others must be

put into practice on the path of a true

life. This principle is valid no matter

where you may be. It is unchanging

and eternal. If God were to appear before

such a sage as Buddha, Confucius,

Jesus or Muhammad, and ask

TRUE PARENTS’ MESSAGES 1

Let Us Build a World of Peace through

Living for the Sake of Others

True Father gave this speech on September 16, 2004, at an invitational banquet for finance and business leaders

from the United States, which took place at the Little Angels Performing Arts Center in Seoul, Korea.

him what he thought about this principle,

he would surely reply that this

principle is true. Do you feel the same

way? Please keep in mind that this is

the law of the universe, which is

needed for men and women to live in

their truest form.

What standards set by people in

history do people of today aspire to

reach? Only the standards of people

who lived for the sake of others with a

spirit of sacrifice remain as something

worth striving toward in the world

today. Those who set such standards

are remembered as saints, great men

and women, patriots and children of

filial piety. That which was accomplished

through a spirit of self-sacrifice

is remembered. Sacrificial effort

benefits the greater good. Please think

about this.

The reason my teachings will

emerge as the dominant thought of

the twenty-first century is that I have

been espousing a world where people

live for the sake of others, which is the

direct opposite of a world where people

live for themselves. Consequently,

the hope of human beings can be

found in the unification movement.

You may think that I am being overbearing

in saying this, but please understand

that I take full responsibility

for such an assertion. The world of the

future, for countless years to come,

will follow in the footsteps of this

group, which chooses to live for the

sake of others rather than for its own

sake. The world does not follow those

who live solely for their own sake.

The world doesn’t like such people.

How will we achieve harmony and

unity? It is not achievable through

force, money, power or knowledge.

Everything can be resolved based on

love by living for the sake of others.

We can conclude that by living based

on true love and for the sake of others,

we can restore the world of hell into

the heavenly world. You will see for

yourselves. Is there anyone here who

opposes me? In the past, individuals,

families, nations and the world united

against me. And now there is no one

who does not acknowledge me, because

they can see the results! They

can see the results in the heavens, on

the earth, in the people themselves,

and in the winds of peace. Please

don’t be offended by the conclusions

I’m expressing.

The way for someone to come to

your side is not through struggling

with that person, it is by thinking of

them as if you were his or her parent,

teacher or supervisor. That is the way.

I ask you to live sincerely for the sake

of others for three years. Then you

will come to understand what I am

saying. You must be aware that action

in line with the principles of the universe

is what moves someone’s original

mind.

Please live more for the sake of others.

Those who do so can be entrusted

with responsibility. If there are ten

people, the person who loves and

lives most for the sake of the other

nine will become the central person.

All nine will go to that person. In general,

people think that living for others

entails loss, and is not beneficial to

oneself. However, you must know

that the truth is otherwise: this principle

enables you to become the owner,

the central figure and heir. This is how

heavenly law works.

Distinguished guests, renowned

leaders of Korea, in my lifetime I have

been able to create a global foundation

that transcends race, religion and

nationality in one hundred ninety-one

countries, despite constant misunderstanding

and persecution, and God,

the spirit world and the earth have

recognized me as the True Parents of

Humankind and King of Peace. The

reason for this is that I have practiced

the heavenly way of true love that

calls one to be the first to give, and to

live for others. I did not ask to be

made the King of Peace. This title was

given to me.

Harmony and unity can be

achieved and the ideal of peace can be

realized only when we are motivated

by genuine love to live for the benefit

of others. I have guided humanity

under this practical principle of true

love, true parents and true families according

to the heavenly way.

The ideal family movement, which

is based on the marriage Blessing Ceremony

and peace initiatives that transcend

nationality, race and religion,

are aspects of the true love movement.

This movement calls us to live a

personal, exemplary lifestyle by investing

ourselves to the advantage of

others. The various educational institutions

established in a number of nations

worldwide were created

through my sacrificial investment in

an effort to manifest the founding

ideals of loving heaven, loving humankind

and loving one’s nation. The

global media institutions within

News World Communications, including

the Washington Times and

the Segye Times, were created for the

sake of guiding the world in true love

through a responsible, just and fair

press.

Interreligious peace initiatives, education

in life’s philosophy, projects

showcasing culture and arts, the promotion

of technology transfer, activities

of education and science that

bring people together across religious

and national divides, service activities,

guidance for youth, the women’s

movement, the cultivation of sports,

and all the other projects I have

founded are grounded in the principle

of true love.

Men and women must take the

path of the truth and true love in accordance

with heavenly law. The path

of true love is the fundamental root

that takes priority over any human activity

or undertaking.

No matter how great your fortune

or power, without the foundation of

living for the sake of others, all those

things are transient and are destined

to disappear. On the other hand, a

life of giving and living for the sake

of others automatically enables a person

to become the subject and central

figure.

All barriers will be eliminated in

the era of God’s eternal kingdom of

peace, as people who live with true

love become the owners and central

figures of that age. Conflicts arising

from narrow-mindedness and selfcenteredness,

over differences of skin

color, language, customs and geographical

territory, will disappear.

Now is the time to build the ideal

world in which we can live for one

another together, based on a system of

absolute values.

In conclusion, I pray that God’s

eternal blessings will be with you all

as you engage in your work in the

spirit of altruism in accordance with

the heavenly principles.

True Father came to earth as the savior of mankind, the Messiah and True

Parent and completed all his missions in the providence of restoration.

Three years have now passed since he went to heaven. Looking back,

True Mother had meaningfully named the past three years as a period

of dedicated mourning. She looked after the Bonhyangwon, True Father’s grave,

with a heart of loyalty, filial piety and passion as she struggled on earth to liberate

True Father forever. Moreover, this dedication period was also one to establish

the 7.5 billion people, starting from members and blessed families, in front of

Heaven’s will.

On the foundation of this dedication, a great ceremony for True Father’s Third

Universal Seongwha Anniversary was held on August 30 (7.17 on heavenly calendar) with the catchphrase

“Let’s Connect the World with Peace.” Thirty thousand members from around the world attended this memorial.

This event became an opportunity for members from around the globe to resolve firmly to carry on

True Parents’ achievements and work for world peace. It was a precious time in which True Parents’ noble

status could be raised high as the will of the Family Federation and twenty other providential institutes and

organizations was streamed on the internet live to 194 countries,

The First Sunhak Peace Prize Award Ceremony occurred among many other events. It was a meaningful

moment as globally prominent figures, including the Sunhak laureates, received proof of our deep respect

for True Parents. They were spoken of eloquently in relation to how they have overcame numerous obstacles

and boundaries and worked continuously with unchanging determination, tenacity and love throughout

the entirety of thier lives for the sake of beginning a providential revolution across all areas of study–peace,

the environment and food resources for humanity.

Moreover, on May 30, the 2015 Peace Road launched in Las Vegas, the Cape of Good Hope in South

Africa, and Santiago, Chile, to begin on a ninety-three-day course to commemorate the ninety-three-years

of True Father’s life. Thirty thousand people participated from 121 nations to share and realize True Parents’

dream, the International Highway Project, and their ideal of one human family under Heavenly Parent. I

offer my sincerest gratitude to all the members’ devotion and dedication carried out with beads of sweat in

order to bring light to the world about True Parents’ great providential achievements, centered on True Father’s

third universal seonghwa anniversary.

More than anything else that has occurred since True Father’s seonghwa, we must never forget True

Mother’s deep love as she stood on the front line, cutting through the ink-black darkness and leading us as

a bright light, following the path of the providence with tearful devotion focused solely on God and on

comforting him.

Now is the time for Unificationists to attend True Father in heaven and True Mother on earth, to take the

lead in the providential course for the settlement of Cheon Il Guk and to realize Heavenly Parent’s great

providential achievements in the world. We must stand at the forefront, following the model course set by

True Parents—who have lived sacred lives for the sake of humanity’s salvation, God’s liberation, and world

peace—and unite with a heart of loyalty, filial piety and sincerity toward True Parents, True Father in heaven,

True Mother on earth. When we do so, Heavenly Parent will all reside together in our lives forever.

September 2015 5

Distinguished guests from

home and abroad, beloved

ambassadors for peace, from

across the world, we miss

True Father so much today. Heaven

and humanity have long awaited the

one central figure and Heaven has

had to follow an inexpressibly sorrowful

path for thousands of years in

the course of providential history.

However, the endeavors of Heaven to

send Jesus Christ through the people

of Israel and complete the work of the

providence two thousand years ago

ended in despair and anguish. Therefore,

Jesus Christ died on the cross,

leaving behind the promise that he

would come again.

Thenceforth, the two-thousandyear-

history of the providence centered

on Christianity was supposed to

have prepared us to receive the Lord

at his the Second Advent. However,

Christians were unaware of Heaven’s

internal providence.

This is because they did not genuinely

understand God. That is why

in the midst of Christian history, communism

came to exist with its concept

of atheism. How devastated must

God have been as he looked upon

such a situation!

Nevertheless, providential history

has continued. Korea is now celebrating

the seventieth anniversary of its

liberation, but seventy years ago, it

was unknown to the rest of the world

and was in a most difficult situation.

Yet, Heaven chose and established the

people of Korea.

Thus, Korea became a nation that

gave birth to the Lord at his Second

Advent, the only begotten son and

only begotten daughter of God. In

any part of the world, it is difficult for

a person who bears the responsibilities

of a higher position to come down

to the lowest position. How much

more difficult, then, would it have

been for the Lord, the Savior, the True

Parents, who came as the King of

Kings and the True Parents of

Heaven, Earth and Humankind, to do

so? However, because Christianity

with its prepared foundation failed to

fulfill its responsibility, the course of

True Parents has had to begin from

the position of the servant of servant,

the providential course of which you

know very well. Even under such circumstances,

True Parents lived

through days in which they comforted

Heaven and made the pledge

to fulfill God’s will, which is his

dream and his hope, without fail.

In the 1970s, the global situation

was such that the United States, the

representative nation of the democratic

world since after the Second

6 TRUE PEACE

TRUE PARENTS’ MESSAGES 2

Seonghwa Memorial Speech

This is the message True Mother delivered on August 30 at the Cheongshim Peace World Center during

the main event to commemorate the third anniversary of True Father’s ascension.

She began speaking after the audience joined her in singing a song titled, “Saranghae,” to True Father.

They sang the first verse twice.

World War, held sway over the world.

However, it too faced hardships. The

United States, which claims to serve

God and has even inscribed on its

dollar bills the phrase, “In God we

trust,” came to be threatened by communism,

and its situation became all

the more dire due to such issues as the

breakdown of the family, extreme individualism,

youth problems, drug

problems and ideological problems.

However, no one was able to step

forward and resolve the situation. At

that time, True Father left Korea behind

and went to the United States.

He said that he had come as a doctor

because America was sick, and he had

come as a fireman because it was as if

America were on fire. These words

aroused the leading class of the

United States. They came to respect

him. However, some politicians that

could not look into the future became

obstacles on his path. He still forgave

them and awakened the United

States, and in the end, he brought

about the downfall of communism.

Father in South America

Not only that, but he also founded the

Association for the AULA (Unity of

Latin America) and inspired the South

American nations, which were fast becoming

communized. Ultimately, he

saved those nations. In this way, a single

individual accomplished things

unknown to the rest of the world,

which even nations with vast power

and wealth could not achieve. This

was possible because he was the True

Parent. That is not all. He made many

preparations in his concern for the future

of the innumerable human beings

and the future of the Earth. The

providential work of human salvation

would have been difficult even with

the cooperation of Christianity with

its two-thousand-year-old foundation

and the cooperation of nations.

Father’s global efforts

At the International Conference on

the Unity of the Sciences in 1981, he

advocated that one way to world

peace was to build the International

Peace Highway. After that, he toured

through four cities in the United

States in 2006 and afterward I carried

out a speaking tour of 120 nations.

The highway would begin from the

Cape of Good Hope in Africa, pass

through Europe and Asia, the Korean

peninsula, through Santiago in Chile,

South America, to New York. Father

spoke of building a tunnel under the

Bering Strait in Alaska. He advocated

the way by which the world could become

one, by passing through those

places and going through Moscow

and the Japanese islands and arriving

at the Korean Peninsula, and he

opened the way to make it possible.

Based on this historic course, on this

third anniversary of Father’s ascension

we have been able to complete

the great course of the Peace Road in

which 121 nations participated.

True Parents in Korea

Since the beginning of history, all the

people who claimed that their nations

were superpowers of the age were all

self-centered. They only thought

about benefiting their own nations.

However, because True Father and I

are True Parents, we work to open the

way of understanding by which

everyone can become one. One hundred

years ago, a great Indian poet,

Tagore, praised Korea, saying that

Korea was the “Lamp of the East.”

Korea’s economy of today is not this

lamp of the East. A lamp refers to

light, and the light is the truth. The

truth is the word. Therefore, that

phrase means that through True Parents’

teachings, this nation, Korea, can

stand high in relation to Asia and the

world. Now, then, I want to ask all of

you here today, What do you want to

say to True Father? I want to tell him:

Father, from now on, you have nothing

to worry about. We will fulfill our

responsibilities at all cost. Therefore,

we hope and pray that you will now

be free to go and come as you please,

and to comfort God, our Heavenly

Parent, who has been lonely until

now, in the eternal garden of the original

homeland.

Our obligation

This is the flag and the flower of the

culture of heart, which we need to

show the rest of the world as a responsibility

we need to fulfill. I hope

that you will bear this in mind and

with the same level of determination

that I have, do your very best.

September 2015 7

A view of the audience from the stage; Above: True Mother containing her deep emotions

Are you the young seonghwa

soldiers that have assembled

here from seventy nations?

You will become the owners

of a substantial future.

I believe that this year, particularly

now that we have only a day until Father’

third seonghwa memorial, members

of our worldwide Unification

Family have sincerely repented and

offered conditions. This year also

marks the seventieth anniversary of

Korea’s independence and that of the

establishment of the United Nations.

During my speaking tour in Europe, I

said that a movement to attend God

must take place in the United Nations.

Christianity has a two-thousandyear

old cultural realm in Europe, in

which Christians take great pride. Yet,

Communism was born from that

Christian cultural realm. Communism

is an ideology that asserts God’s

nonexistence. Democracy is theist.

However, there was a time when

communist forces enjoyed enormous

power. That was in the 1980s.

Beginning from 1970, the power of

the United States began to weaken. Father

believed that world peace would

become more difficult to achieve if the

United States, the country representative

of the democratic world, was not

set up on a firm foundation. Hence,

despite the various situations taking

place in Korea at that time, he crossed

over to the United States with concern

for the world and for humanity. He

did a lot of work during our forty

years in the United States.

In the 1970s, the United States was

becoming sick from individualism,

which penetrated the nation alongside

the pride that obtains from becoming

the central nation of the world

soon after World War II. The collapse

of the family, juvenile problems, drug

problems and ideological problems

were rampant. When the people of

the United States—whom Heaven

had raised for two hundred years,

began to flop down in their pursuit of

their nation’s benefit instead of the

world’s, Father came forward. He

said he had come as a doctor because

the United States was suffering from

disease and that he had come as a firefighter

because the United States was

on fire. With this message, Father set

off on a fifty-state speaking tour, gathering

and awakening people from the

upper class, political circles, financial

circles and other related people.

That was why many intellectuals

respected Father in the early days and

why those who supported him increased

in number. Unfortunately,

politicians who could not look ahead,

into the future, ended up persecuting

Father because of their narrow views.

With our being the True Parents who

must bring salvation to all of humanity,

True Father embraced them and

was able to confidently move forward

even amidst such a difficult situation.

All of you are probably under

thirty. Hence, you will not be wholly

familiar with True Parents’ history.

Thankfully, Chambumo Gyeong, the

third volume of scripture, has been

completed in both Korean and English

during this seonghwa period. You

must study hard.

8 TRUE PEACE

TRUE PARENTS’ MESSAGES 3

True Mother’s Message to

Young People

True Mother gave this message on August 29 to participants in the Youth and Students World Assembly in the

Grand Hall at the Cheongpyeong Heaven and Earth Training Center in Korea.

Ever since its inauguration, the

United Nations did a great many

things for the world. Had the United

Nations not intervened in the Korean

War, the Korea we know today would

not exist. While conducting the providence,

Heaven established the United

Nations to protect the True Parents,

who were to come to this country.

Sadly, however, the United Nations

has no ideology. The countries that

meet at the United Nations usually

think of their own national benefit.

They do not thoroughly know

Heaven’s providence. This is why no

matter how much effort they invest in

putting their heads together and trying

to become one, it will not work

because there has been no center,

which is why I said that the United

Nations must become an organization

that attends Heavenly Parent and

True Parents at the center.

Unseen by you, the providence of

history has been unfolding with urgency.

God created human beings so

that he could become the True Parent

through them. Yet, humans, who were

supposed to rise to such a position,

failed to fulfill their responsibilities.

They were greedy. Had they obeyed

God’s instruction and waited until

they had completely grown, the

world would not have become what it

is today. We would have achieved the

kingdom of heaven on earth and in

the spiritual realm already. Man’s

error resulted in God carrying a heavy

burden.

The six-thousand-year providential

history mentioned in the Bible could

have not moved forward without any

indemnity. Are you learning about this

through the Divine Principle? It took

Heaven four thousand years of hard

work in order for Jesus Christ to be

born two thousand years ago. In other

words, the process to raise the chosen

people to the point that they establish

a nation was not easy. This is why it

took four thousand years. The law of

indemnity is the reason it took so long.

Hence, God sent Jesus Christ, his

only begotten son, after so much hard

work and effort; yet, not only the people

of Israel but also those in the Judaic

realm and even Mary were

unable to support Jesus. God’s creation

consists of plus and minus, pistil

and stamen, male and female. Hence,

having the only begotten son of God

alone could not work out. Jesus had to

find God’s only begotten daughter,

but he could not fulfill his responsibility.

This is why upon his crucifixion he

said he would return. He will come

back to carry out the marriage supper

of the Lamb, in other words, to marry.

Until now, Christians have been

unaware of this truth. They do not

know why the returning Lord is coming.

They believe that they can receive

salvation by keeping their individual

faith. Sadly, it does not work that way.

Not realizing this, Christians have

been calling us a cult instead. Our

members are attending the True Parents.

You were born within the second-

generation realm thanks to True

Parents. You are different from those

outside, in the world. Hence, I am

telling you that you must grow well.

The three thousand five hundred

young people who have assembled

here today must follow True Parents

and become the personification of

their path, the truth they gave us, the

life and the love.

In order to do that, you must not

put yourselves in the position of only

wanting to receive. Just as True Parents

have done, you must practice

true love. You must have a heart that

gives, gives and still wants to give

and share. You must create such an

environment. This responsibility lies

ahead of you.

This is how we can achieve one

world. I said you are pure water, didn’t

I? Clear water, however, must not

be stagnant. It must continue to flow

and give birth to many new lives

wherever it flows.

This is the basics: True Parents have

a dream. Just like God’s dream, their

dream is not having any muddy

water in sight. Everything must become

as clear as water. In other

words, all people around the world

must attend True Parents.

Did you just watch the Sunhak

Peace Prize award ceremony program?

Being the True Parent of humanity,

for quite a long time, True

Father was greatly concerned about all

the problems humanity faced, including

food problems and global warming.

He took the lead in trying to find

ways to resolve these problems. True

Father dedicated his entire life to realizing

God’s hope, to resolving the pain

and bitterness of humanity and to

building the world God had originally

envisaged at the time of the Creation.

Until now, the central figures that

Heaven sent failed to fulfill their responsibilities.

Those standing on the

Christian foundation, in particular,

did not fulfill their responsibilities.

They waited for the returning Lord

but did not know the purpose of his

return. They believed that only believers

would go up to Heaven, riding on

clouds. That, however, does not make

sense. Right? This comes from not

knowing the Principle of Creation,

which is why you need to be in positions

where you can teach. To do that,

you must learn a lot, offer many devotions

and invest a lot of effort. The absence

of an owner and everyone

desiring to become the owner as a result

of that absence are the cause of all

the different types of problems the

world faces today.

This is why rich powerful countries

are preparing for war in order to

obtain more. They are producing

weapons. On our way to a peaceful

united world, weapons are unnecessary.

Isn’t there a Bible verse that says

that? That spears and knives will be

melted to make what? It says they

should be used to make farming

tools. It says that plows and plowshares

ought to be made out of them,

doesn’t it?

Because we are wasting money on

unnecessary things, the earth is now

in great pain. Desertification is not

only happening in China, but also in

the United States. With the ice melting

at the North Pole, the sea level is getting

higher. What do you think will

happen? It will destroy the ecosystem.

Human disorderliness has resulted in

things that destroy nature, which in

turn is contaminating the seawater. As

a result, the coral reefs, which are essential

to the sea, are also dying.

When we think about all these points,

can you just stand still? People that do

not know this must be educated. That

is why I have so much work to do.

Will every single one of you at least

help me do it?

Please have dreams: I will master a

field in which True Parents desire me

to work. I will become a great scholar.

I will become a famous person. Please

have dreams of that type. I sincerely

hope you become seonghwa students

who achieve True Parents’ dream.

Beloved True Parents, True

Mother, distinguished leaders

from around the world,

blessed central family members,

ladies and gentlemen; it is an

honor and a great privilege to stand

before you today on the occasion of

the third anniversary of our True Father’s

ascension.

When I reflect on the depth and

significance of our True Father’s life

and legacy, my heart is filled with

eternal love and gratitude. I say this

not only because I have been given

this precious life by my parents but

also because I see the multitude of

blessings that our True Parents have

given to the world.

I am continually awestruck by the

beauty and diversity of our global

family, which has been raised and nurtured

by our True Parents. Imagine for

a moment what your life would have

been like had you not met True Parents,

living outside the realm of the

blessing, without meaning, purpose,

vision, a clear path to follow; without

their exemplary lives that show us the

way to fulfill our dreams and aspirations.

How blessed we are to have

been brought together by True Parents

as one family, united together without

any barrier, boundary or division.

Thank you, True Parents!

To so many millions of people

around the world, indeed to all the

people of the world, True Parents

10 TRUE PEACE

TRUE CHILDREN’S MESSAGES

Acting on True Father’s Legacy

The FFWPU international president’s message

By Sun Jin Moon

Sun Jin nim gave this address on August 30 at the main event in the Cheongshim Peace World Center during the

Third Universal Seonghwa Memorial of Sun Myung Moon, the True Parent of Heaven, Earth and Humankind to

an audience of members and others from many nations. While exiting the stage, she hugged True Mother.

The FFWPU international president delivering her speech at the main event

have given, fully and completely, their

parental hearts, their unconditional

true love and their resources, always

living for the sake of others.

When I think of True Father, the

image that is forever emblazoned in

my mind is one of an indomitable

force of true love. At every moment, I

see True Father’s unforgettable smile,

expressing his embracing, loving heart

and crossing every border and boundary

with compassion, generosity and

hopes for peace. I see him even hugging

his enemy. Nothing could stop

him from practicing true love.

Our True Father lived and walked

this earth for ninety-two years, standing

squarely at the center of God’s

providence, called by heaven, and by

Jesus himself, for a mission that was

beyond ordinary comprehension. Facing

every challenge and difficulty

head on, he prayed and worked without

ceasing, gathering disciples one

by one, even in the face of continual

opposition. Although the course of

restoration was torturous, he endured.

And he prevailed. And, yes, he

emerged victorious. What for each of

us is a divine spark embedded in our

hearts was for True Father a roaring

fire of passion for God and for the

restoration of humanity. If I focus on

one central theme that characterizes

his entire life, it is the theme of unification

and oneness. Each and everything

he did over the course of

ninety-two years was for the sake of

unity, harmony and peace centered on

true love, true life and true lineage.

As you know the meaning of the

term, Cheon Il Guk, is “two become

one” as in a “unified nation of peace.”

This core principle was applied by

True Father to the relations among religions,

nations, races, ethnicities, cultures

and civilizations for the sake of

establishing one family under God.

Every organization and project that

True Father and True Mother established

had this vision in mind. Oneness,

of course, does not come about

automatically. To restore the world in

accordance with God’s providence, he

strove every single day of his life to

witness, teach, educate, bless and save

every single human being. He lived

each day as though it were his last.

In 1960, at the time of their Holy

Wedding, our True Father formed his

eternal partnership with our True

Mother. Their fifty-two years of marriage

cleansed and restored the fallen

legacy of Adam and Eve and opened

the path for all of humankind to be

blessed. As one absolutely united and

victorious couple, they fulfilled the

position of the eternal True Parents,

giving the blessing to couples all over

the world. Thank you, True Father!

Thank you, True Mother! Thank you

for being our eternal True Parents!

There is no corner of the globe

where True Father did not take this

message of oneness for the individual,

family, tribe, nation and world centered

on true love. In every field of endeavor—

religion, education,

interfaith dialogue, good governance,

renewal of the United Nations, the environment,

sports, the arts, the media,

academia, humanitarian and emergency

relief, peace and security, youth

and women’s empowerment, unification

of the Korean Peninsula, the list

goes on and on—he made an indelible

mark for the sake of true love,

unity and peace.

True Father’s life cannot be encapsulated

in any speech nor in any one

book. True Father and True Mother,

our eternal True Parents, have lived

their lives in absolute attendance to

our Heavenly Parent. They have lived

each moment for the sake of others.

They have substantiated and given us

true love, true life and true lineage.

What I want to leave you with

today is a reminder that although

True Father and True Mother have

fulfilled their missions, we each have

our own portion of responsibility.

Therefore, as we reflect on our True

Father’s life and legacy and as we

commemorate his glorious life, let us

keep in mind that the greatest tribute

we can offer on this day and in the

days that lie ahead is to unite centering

on our True Mother with an absolute

commitment to build on True

Father’s foundation, emulating his life

of daily devotion through hoondokhae

and working each day to

transform the world and build the nation

of Cheon Il Guk. Will you do

this? Yes!

In closing, I have one more question

for you: As filial sons and daughters

can we, on this holy day, pledge

our absolute faith, absolute love and

absolute obedience to our True Parents?

Yes? Aju?

Please never forget the divine light

that dwells within you. You are the

embodiment of the hopes and dreams

of Heavenly Parent and True Parents.

Thank you my beloved brothers and

sisters. We are truly blessed to have

our True Parents and to become one

family under God.

To conclude my remarks, and in

memory of our True Father, I would

like to ask you all to stand and turn to

your neighbor and offer that person a

big hug just as our True Father would,

keeping in mind H is for harmony, U

is for unity, and G is for goodness,

gratitude, and God. As you embrace,

feel your hearts unite, feel the joy and

harmony in your union and send that

loving energy of gratitude and goodness

to Heavenly Parent, True Parents

and all of creation.

Please say Kamsa hamnida (thank

you) and Sarang hamnida (I love you)

to each other. Can you feel True Father

smiling, loving and hugging you

back? He is and he lives forever when

we practice true love and come together

as one family under Heavenly

Parent.

Finally, thank you for being here on

this historic day to honor our beloved

True Father and our dearest True

Mother. Let us live each moment in

absolute oneness with all creation,

with unity of vision and sincerity of

heart. Let us absolutely complete our

mission to bring every child of God

back together as one. Let us bring victory

in vision 2020 and realize Cheon

Il Guk. All together, let us pledge our

victory to Heavenly Parent, True Parents

and the entire globe! Let’s all give

three cheers of seungri. Seungri! Seungri!

Seungri! Aju! Namaste.

12 TRUE PEACE

MAJOR EVENTS

The Third Universal Seonghwa Memorial

of Sun Myung Moon,

the True Parent of Heaven, Earth and Humankind

FOUNDATION DAY

PICTORIAL

True Father ascended to heaven on the seventeenth day of the seventh month by the heavenly calendar in 2012.

The main event during this year’s memorial period took place on August 30, the Gregorian date on which the heavenly

calendar date falls this year, at the Cheongshim Peace World Center. It began at 9:00 AM.

Cho Sung Il, secretary-general of the international headquarters, welcomed everyone including those viewing the

event through the internet broadcast. He explained that in Korean tradition the three years after a parents ascends

is a time during which the children express their filial piety by mourning for their parents. “Today,” he said, “let us

reflect on the significance of this third anniversary and think about the heart of True Mother, who devotedly offered

mourning conditions.” During the twenty minutes before True Mother took the stage, two musical groups performed.

The first was the 2015 Global Top Gun Team, which sang two songs, “The Father’s Dwelling Place” in

Korean and “You Raise Me Up” in English. The other group was the Universal Peace Choir, which included 350

choristers from various countries singing a medley of True Parents’ favorite songs via individual pre-recorded video

performances that technicians synchronized with one another and with live singers onstage.

Upon entering the auditorium, True Mother oversaw the placing on the commemorative altar of a large flower

arrangement, carried by two uniformed Universal Peace Academy students. The master of ceremonies for the main

event was Rev. Ryu Kyeong Seuk, president of FFWPU Korea, who introduced the international vice-president of

FFWPU, Rev. An Jun Seok, who offered the opening prayer, following which True Family members and others offered

flowers in remembrance of True Father. Sun Jin Moon, international president of FFWPU then spoke.

Dr. Lee Soo Sung, prime minister of the Republic of Korea (1995–1997); and Anote Tong, president of Kiribati

(2003–present) gave memorial addresses.

Following a video tribute, True Mother spoke impressively and movingly about the True Father’s life in the context

of Heaven’s grief over the Fall and long effort to establish True Parents as well as Korea’s responsibility to stand

tall in Asia and the world based on True Parents’ teachings. The memorial event concluded with a musical performance

by Japanese second- and third-generation members.

Beloved ladies and gentlemen

from home and abroad, three

years have already passed

since the ascension of the Dr.

Sun Myung Moon. I believe many of

you have come from afar to commemorate

Rev. Moon’s ascension. Many of

you had been close to Rev. Moon on

many more occasions that I was.

Nonetheless, I am humbled to have

been selected to give today’s memorial

address.

More than anything else, I pray

that the virtuous, warm and compassionate

president Hak Ja Han Moon is

able to fulfill with a serene heart, the

mission entrusted to her by God.

As you well know, we all hoped

that the twenty-first century would

begin a new millennium of peace.

However, all over the world, we see

countless people dying from unending

religious conflict, territorial disputes,

terror and other issues. Even in

Korea, we can see endless conflicts

and moral decay. Whenever I hear

such sad news, I feel the importance

and preciousness of Rev. Moon’s existence.

As we all clearly know, more

than anyone else, Rev. Moon devoted

himself entirely to the realization of

world peace and public prosperity.

Rev. Moon’s endeavors and life

achievements were so great that his

complete legacy cannot be fathomed.

Nevertheless, numerous people mention

that he devoted his mind and

body to loving heaven, loving humankind

and loving the nation.

Rev. Moon truly loved and respected

God; we all know that he invested

his entire life to the task of

realizing the ideal world that God

longed for. In the prayer he offered

just before his ascension, Rev. Moon

said, “I accomplished everything.” I

am sure you all saw the video of his

prayer. Until the last moment on this

earth, Rev. Moon lived a filial life of

piety and loyalty toward God. Rev.

Moon’s life is a testament of love toward

humanity as well as a life lived

in accordance with heavenly law.

Throughout his life, Rev. Moon

traveled around the world to promote

peace activities. When humanity was

rife with religious and philosophical

differences as well as differences due

to nationality and race, Rev. Moon

promoted the mature course of realizing

a global community by taking a

path of interracial, interreligious and

international cooperation and reconciliation.

At a time of unstoppable Soviet expansion,

Rev. Moon announced in

1985 the downfall of the Soviet Union

and the end of Communism. Rev.

Moon then met Premier Gorbachev

and Rev. Moon encouraged and supported

reforms aimed at opening the

Soviet Union. He also launched the

Women’s Federation for World Peace

as a UN NGO and paved the way for

women to lead peace activities. Is

there another Korean who is as respected

as Rev. Moon by Americans,

Japanese, French, British and other citizens

around the world? Is there another

person who has married young

people and paved the way for them to

realize true love and peace through

the blessing?

In August 2007, I offered congratulatory

remarks during the Cheon Il

Guk International Marriage Blessing

Ceremony for the Reunification of

Korea and World Peace. Since the

1960s, Rev. Moon and Mrs. Moon

have hosted Blessing Ceremonies.

This blessing transcends religion and

nationality; it is the clearest path to tie

humanity together as one global family

and to realize world peace. Not

only does the blessing lower divorce

rates it is also a clear token of true love

and harmony. All the blessing participants

I saw were deeply moved.

Ladies and gentlemen from home

and abroad,

As you well know, Rev. Moon has

devoted incomparable energy and

passion toward the reunification of

North Korea and South Korea. In 1991,

relations between the Koreas were especially

strained but Rev. Moon visited

Pyongyang and while standing in

front of North Korean leaders in Mansudae

Assembly Hall he shocked the

participants by boldly mentioning that

the humanistic Juche ideology was

wrong. Rev. Moon also met with Premier

Kim Il Sung and strongly emphasized

the importance of North–South

reunification. Rev. Moon pioneered

the meeting of separated families and

the reconciliation between North

Korea and South Korea. He ran the

Pyonghwa Motor Company in

Nampo, the Botonggang Hotel and

the Peace Center. Rev. Moon truly and

tremendously invested himself toward

reconciliation and cooperation

between North Korea and South

Korea. This was possible because he

had a clear vision and philosophy of

peace and a passionate love for his nation

and its citizens.

Rev. Moon did his very best to prevent

ethnic war. He was a pioneering

leader who fostered unity, peace, prosperity

and pride among the Korea

people. Rev. Moon showed us what

the duty of love is; he was the model

of living for the sake of others. Rev.

Moon may have ascended but his

words remain etched in our hearts. We

are fortunate that the amazing Dr. Hak

Ja Han Moon has upheld Rev. Moon’s

will and is leading and guiding the

18 TRUE PEACE

The Model of Living for Others

By Dr. Lee Soo Sung

Dr. Lee Soo Sung, prime minister of the Republic of Korea (1995–1997) gave this memorial

address at the event commemorating the third anniversary of True Father’s ascension.

THE THIRD UNIVERSAL SEONGHWA MEMORIAL ADDRESSES

As is customary in my country,

let me share with you our traditional

blessing: Kam na

bane ni mauri, meaning, May

we all be blessed with good health. It

is indeed a great honor and a privilege

for me to be given this opportunity

to pay special tribute to the late

Rev. Sun Myung Moon, in whose

honor we have gathered here today to

commemorate the third anniversary

of his passing away from this life. It is

never easy when a loved-one passes

on, especially if such a loved one is as

special as the late Rev. Moon, a man

whose life’s work has reached all corners

of the globe and whose legacy of

one family under God is one that will

remain as a guiding beacon beyond

our lifetimes and for generations to

come.

Rev. Moon’s and Mrs. Moon’s vision

of a world that coexists in harmony

is embodied in the principle

that Rev. Moon has taught his global

family, which is the principle of living

for the sake of others. As parents and

grandparents ourselves we can well

understand and we can easily associate

ourselves with such a principle.

For our children and our grandchildren

are what gives meaning to our

lives. It is for their sakes that we will

and we must continue to advocate for

a peaceful and safe future, a peaceful

and safe world.

Ladies and gentlemen, the honor

bestowed upon me, together with my

colleague, Dr. Gupta, as recipients of

the inaugural Sunhak Peace Prize for

2015 adds credence to the story and

the plight of those people whose survival

is threatened by climate change,

an issue that has been the focus of my

campaign for the past many years.

For as the late Rev. Moon and Dr.

Hak Ja Han Moon have been advocating

throughout their lives, this planet,

our one and only home, is one that

needs to be nurtured and one that

needs to be treated with the respect

and the reverence that it deserves.

Our Lord God Creator not only

blessed us with this planet, our one

and only home but most importantly,

he blessed us with being custodians of

the riches and the resources that are

part and parcel of this planet, our one

and only home. However, with that

comes the responsibility and the obligation

that the earth continues to sustain

future generations. It is indeed a

shared responsibility and shared

moral obligation that we as responsible

global citizens should not and cannot

ever forget. To do so would

endanger our children, our grandchildren

and their children. Ladies and

gentlemen, I applaud and honor the

vision and the work of Rev. and Mrs.

Moon. We should live for the sake of

others and live as one family under

God. That is a legacy that I am very

honored to have been associated with

as a co-recipient of the inaugural Sunhak

Peace Prize. And let me assure

you, it is one that will guide and

strengthen my resolve to continue my

advocacy against the challenges of climate

change. In closing, allow me to

again express my condolences and

my deepest respect on the occasion of

the occasion of this ceremony marking

the third anniversary of the passing

of the Rev. Moon. I have every

confidence that his legacy, through his

dear wife, Mrs. Moon, and through

his children and grandchildren and

throughout his global family, his

legacy will live on and will flourish in

all corners of the world. Let us honor

Rev., Moon’s and Mrs. Moon’s visions

and principles through our individual

and shared contributions toward the

preservation of the earth as one family

under God. With these words allow

me to share with you our traditional

blessings, te mauri, te raoi, te tabomoa.

Kamsa hamnida.

unification movement. I believe that

this is truly fortunate and a blessing

for the future of both the unification

movement and the world.

When the United States considered

abolishing tax breaks on Chinese

goods, Rev. Moon followed his ideal

that the East and the West must all

prosper fairly; in 1994, he campaigned

for the extension of tax breaks on Chinese

goods. China and the whole

world must recognize this achievement.

Rev. Moon helped China’s economic

development and greatly supported

the entrance of Korean businesses

into the Chinese market.

Today, the world needs to overcome

differences of religion, denomination,

race and nationality. As one

global family and one global community

under God, we must combine

our strengths and our wisdom toward

realizing a better world. As Rev.

Moon often said, to realize this endeavor,

we must completely invest

our mind, heart, body and soul toward

this noble endeavor.

The space left by Rev. Moon’s ascension

is truly great; nevertheless, let

us invest ourselves completely in the

task of inheriting and advancing Rev.

Moon’s will.

I pray that Rev. Moon may find

I offer my deep condolences to

His Legacy Will Live On

By Anote Tong

President Tong is the chief of state and head of the government of Kiribati.

The main event began at 9 AM

Korea time on August 30 at the

Cheongshim Peace World

Center in Gapyeong-gun.

Thirty thousand Unificationists, including

some in leadership roles that

had come from many other nations

attended the ceremony, which many

others watched in their own countries,

live over the internet. The ceremony

opened with beautiful

performances by the Global Top Gun

trainees and the Universal Peace

Choir.

When True Mother entered, she

first offered a large flower bouquet to

True Father. The True Children and

some selected leaders then offered individual

flowers. As audience members

arrived at the Cheonghshim

Peace World Center, they were given

individual flowers and in groups of

about twenty, approached a long table,

and on command bowed and offered

the floor. Following the final conclusion

of the event, audience members

could also go onstage and offer a provided

flower on the main altar.

True Mother gave the main address

and several dignitaries spoke in memory

of True Father. Their speeches appear

elsewhere in this issue of the

magazine.

After this initial stage of the event,

the second stage was a cultural performance,

a heart-moving musical,

The One Who Loved Japan Most, performed

mainly by Japanese members.

The first anniversary event had

True Parents’ salvific influence on

Korea as its theme. The second anniversary

focused on the Americas

and the third on True Parents’ providence

in Japan. The story expressed

True Parents’ love for Japan through

many years and their desperate efforts

to separate Japan from Satan and

raise the nation to play its providential

maternal role in saving humanity.

The musical depicted Father’s time

studying in Japan, sending missionaries

to Japan from Korea and battling

communism there, as well as True

Mother’s tours of Japan and other aspects

of their work in that significant

country. The event ended with cheers

of Og mansei led by the Japanese

Church President Eiji.

Cheon Il Guk Scriptures

True Mother: “Today is a day of true

joy. What was it that I said at the third

anniversary of Father’s ascension? I

said, ‘Thank you, Father, for your

hard work, Please give us the burden

you were shouldering on earth and

become free as you freely come and

go between our Heavenly Parent and

Bonhyangwon.’” Isn’t that so? Do you

have that kind of heart toward Father?

Today is an occasion to congratulate

and be grateful for the completion

of the three great scriptures,

including the last Chambumo Gyeong,

in three languages. The History

Compilation Committee and all committee

members, professors, and all

who were part of compiling Chambumo

Gyeong and the three great

scriptural works have worked hard,

and I offer my gratitude. I congratulate

you.

We should be confident now.

When God was creating heaven and

earth he had a dream. He had a goal.

However, what happened? Our

Heavenly Parent was not able to real-

ize that dream due to the Human

Fall. For the first time in six thousand

years our Heavenly Parent was able

to fulfill his dream through True Parents

and end the grief-stricken providential

history of restoration through

indemnity. Let us express our gratitude

to Heavenly Parent and True

Parents who have opened a new era.

For Heaven, the beginning and the

end are the same.

Our Heavenly Parent’s goal is the

same as True Parents’ goal. Therefore,

True Parents’ words from the very beginning

stage until now are the same.

They may change according to the

time or how they were expressed, but

the core content is one. This is because

our Heavenly Parent and True Parents

have one shared goal. In this regard,

there are many scriptures, but these

three great scriptural works are the

essence of their entire providential

history. They are the essence. They are

perfect jewels that cannot be added to

or subtracted from.

You need to know that the reason

that we gave everything for this project

for three years following True Father’s

ascension is the power of love

coming from our Heavenly Parent

and True Parents, who are striving to

embrace all human beings. Therefore,

there cannot be any adjustments; this

is the center. No one can even try anything,

in any way. These are perfect. In

this regard, today you have attained

great jewels of all time with these

three great scriptures. Congratulations.

This was True Mother’s speech at

the dedication ceremony for Chambumo

Gyeong on September 1, which

took place in the Great Hall of the

Cheongpyeong Heaven and Earth

Training Center. Over a thousand invited

guests attended the event. Reports

and commemorative remarks

were given by core staff members of

the Chambumo Gyeong Compilation

Committee, its president, Kim Young

Hwi; its vice-president, Lee Jae Seok;

committee member Kim Seog

Byeong; and Dr. Kim Min Ha. Entertainment

followed the banquet. A

male acapella sextet performed and

History Compilation Committee

members staged a short musical

based on their experiences in compiling

and dedicating Chambumo Gyeong.

The dedication ceremony concluded

with all present, including True

Mother, singing “Saranghae Abo nim.”

Cheongpyeong liberation

The 2015 Special Cheongpyeong

Great Works took place from August

28–30 at the Cheongpyeong Heaven

and Earth Training Center. People

from eighty countries came bringing

the total to number of participants in

this year’s Great Works to forty-two

thousand—the highest number to

date. This summer’s Great Works

were especially meaningful as it coincided

with the third anniversary of

True Father’s ascension. A special

meeting with True Mother, the 2015

Youth and Student World Assembly, a

Prayer–Wish Ceremony, a holy

ground pilgrimage, ancestor liberation,

a Blessing Ceremony for ancestors,

a lottery of holy items and

various other programs occurred

throughout the weekend.

During the Great Works, president

Moon Yeon Ah of WFWP International

gave a testimony about her experiences

attending True Parents. She

said, “True Mother overcame her

physical difficulties after the helicopter

accident, even though it was hard

to keep steady. True Mother said, ‘I

must recover quickly and attend True

Father. True Father doesn’t even rest,

so I must not lay down to rest either.’”

president of the Luxembourgian Parliament,

served as the moderator for

the session and commented following

each laureate’s presentation.

UPF World Summit 2015 also featured

eight embedded seminars. In

line with their themes, Peace, Security

and Human Development, discussions

took place at these seminars on

perspectives of peace, peace in Middle

East, women’s rights, family values,

peace in Asia and in Pacific

Ocean areas.

Peace Road finale

The Citizens Federation for the Unification

of North Korea and South

Korea hosted a Completion Ceremony

for 120 Nations and an International

Symposium for Advancing

World Peace and Korea’s Unification.

This was in conjunction with the

Peace Road activity that our members

in nations throughout the world undertook.

The Peace Road 2015 Completion

Ceremony for 120 Nations took place

on August 27, in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun

Gate Central Plaza. Peace Road

had reached its final destination,

Gwanghwamun, after having traced

out the course of the International

Peace Highway on the global.

After the ceremony, an International

Symposium for Advancing

World Peace and Korea’s Unification

took place in the Korean National Assembly

(parliament) Building Complex.

This event attracted five

hundred prominent figures and cyclists

from around the world. Part one

of the event was a welcoming ceremony

for the cyclists and part two

was the main symposium.

Part one included Peace Road participants

speaking about their experience

as part of the global event as well

as welcoming remarks representatives

of the Unification Future Forum, National

Assembly Member (MP) Cho

Myung Chul and Peace Road Executive

Chairman Son Byung Ho. The audience

listened to a reading of a

congratulatory telegram from Korean

Prime Minister Hwang Kyo Ahn.

They also heard congratulatory addresses

from the Minister of Unification

Hong Yong yo; Minister of Land,

Infrastructure and Transport Yo Il Ho;

Minister of Culture, Sports and

Tourism Kim Jongdeok; Vice-Speaker

of the National Assembly, Jung Gab

Yun; National Assembly member

(Saenuri Party) Ju Ho Young; Leonid

Kravchuk, president of Ukraine

(1991–1994).

In the symposium, under the

theme, Advancing World Peace and

Korea’s Unification, representatives

gave reports and presentations on the

Peace Road events from each of our

FFWPU regions (North America, Central

America, South America, East

Africa, West Africa, Middle East, Europe,

North East, Asia, Great China,

Oceania, Japan and Korea).

Academic Conference

On August 24, Sun Moon University

held an international academic conference

under the theme Rev. Sun

Myung Moon’s Vision and Movements

for Peace and Unification. Including

world-renowned peace

scholar, Dr. Johan Galtung (the Norwegian

initiator of the academic area,

peace and conflict studies), fifty-seven

professors from six nations and thirtyfive

universities collected their wisdom

in relation to achieving peace on

the Korean peninsula.

Sun Jo Hwang, president of Sun

Moon University, gave an introductory

address and Son Dae-o chairman

of the Professors World Peace Academy,

gave a welcoming address. Dr.

Johan Galtung, got right to the heart

of the matter with his keynote address.

Dr. Galtung said, “For North

Korea and South Korea to go beyond

trust through mutual dialogue

than unification.” He also evaluated

True Father, founder of Sun Moon

University, as “a person who lived a

life of establishing peace through

North Korea–South Korea dialogue.”

There were presentations and debates

by subject area on topics such as

academic ideas, religion and peace,

peace on the Korean peninsula, world

peace, future peace, family peace, culture

and the arts and peace studies.

On the topic of peace on the Korean

peninsula, Professor Kim Geun Sik of

Gyeongnam University said, “North

Korea and South Korea spent their

seventy-year independence in military

confrontations and hostility. Rev.

Sun Myung Moon’s life is drawing

new attention at this time when peace

on the Korean peninsula has disappeared

and hopes of unification have

become a hollow echo.”

Forum on Climate, the Environment

The Segye Times¸ hosted the 2015 International

Forum on Climate and the

Environment on August 27 at the

Korea Press Center. More than three

hundred distinguished people participated.

These included Yoon

Seongkyu, head of the South Korean

governments’ Ministry of Environment;

Kim Min Ha, president of the

Segye Times; Cha Jun Young, chairman

of the Segye Times; Yang Su Gil

erstwhile presidential advisor and

president of the Presidential Committee

on Green Growth; Kim Dae

Kyeong, an expert member of the

Korea Smart Grid Institute; Yun Sun

Jin, a professor (Seoul University);

and Cho Yong Seong, a professor

(Korea University).

We are in a situation where

changes in the climate and environment

due to thoughtless resource development

and excessive energy

consumption are threatening the continuity

of the global community.

The Segye Times designed this

event to facilitate the sharing of wisdom

by participants on ways to solve

environmental issues for the sake of

the survival and prosperity of human

beings.

In 2014, the Segye Times held the

International Forum on Food and

Forestry and this year the ‘2015 International

Forum on Climate and the

Environment. Their intent has been to

communally address crises which

human beings face based on True Parents’

vision and philosophy. True Parents

have worked to solve

environmental issues for the sake of

all people’s future.

Youth and Student World Assembly

World CARP hosted the Youth and

Student World Assembly from August

28 to 29 at the Cheongpyeong

Heaven and Earth Training Center.

Three thousand five hundred young

people came from a variety of countries.

Within the program, participants

exhibited their local activities

by church region. University students

were paired so that they might develop

a sibling-like relationship over

time if they continue to interact after

leaving the assembly. Other highlights

included a cultural festival, a

holy ground pilgrimage and True

Mother’s message to them. Sun Jin

Moon, international president of

FFWPU, in her speech to the young

people, told them, “Your presence

here today is a source of boundless

joy for our beloved True Parents,” as

she referred to the assembly theme

“HERE, WE ARE.” She also said, “Let

us unite and synergize our talents

and energy as one family. This is a

time for deep reflection about who

we are, why we are here, and what

we can do as young people to create a

world of lasting peace, love and prosperity.”

The next day during the closing

ceremony when True Mother asked,

“Are you young people from seventy

different countries?” they responded

with loud cheers. She encouraged

them saying, “I said that you were

pure water. Isn’t that so? Pure water

must not stop. It must flow. It must

give birth to many life forms wherever

it flows. Have dreams. I Hope

that you will become young people

Seonghwa Student Camp

CARP-Korea hosted the 2015 Korea

National Seonghwa Student Camp,

which they held at the World Jamboree

Center in Ganwon Province,

Korea. It attracted five thousand

members, seonghwa students and

university students from August 7 –

9. The theme was “Seonghwa Students,

Become Lights of Peace and

Unification!” Various programs included

a cultural festival, games, visiting

the Unification Observatory to

peer into North Korea and a peace

concert.

The peace concert took place on the

second day. True Mother spoke to the

young people via video. She said, “I

saw your performance yesterday. It

was wonderful. You give us pride in

our dreams for the future. Become

proud seonghwa students who are

healthy, learn a lot, and grow up well

to fulfil Heavenly Parent’s and True

Parents’ dream.” The audience applauded

and cheered, “True Parents,

we love you! True Parents, thank

you!”

Performances in the peace concert

included the Sunhak Children’s

Choir, guitarist Hata Shuji, entertainment

from young students, and Kpop

singers. Notably, two of the late

Hyo Jin Moon’s children, Moon Shin

Heung nim and Moon Shin Yuh nim,

sang a Korean folk song, “Spring in

the Homeland,” and one of their father’s

songs, “Children Who Gather

Typhoons.”

Martial arts demonstrations

On August 25, eighty martial arts

combatants and seven hundred

Global Top Gun trainees, UPF students

and members gather for a Martial

Arts Festival held the Cheongshim

International Cultural Foundation in

True Mother’s presence.

After part one of the event, True

Mother entered amid loud cheers and

received flowers from second-generation

members. Martial arts demonstrations,

which took place in True

Mother’s presence, began after the

first part ended. First, teams of secondgeneration

and third-generation members

re-created a story through

movement. Next, the True Love Peace

School team, which district pastor

Hwang In Chun is in charge of, gave a

demonstration. Four cadets from Universal

Peace Academy then demonstrated

discipline and courage through

their performance of martial arts

armed with sticks. Following this, the

Japanese Cheon-Bu-Eun-Go team presented

a special performance based on

Moon Hyo Jin’s song, “Be Successful,”

to express their firm loyalty and filial

piety toward True Parents.

The Seonjeong–Seonhwa Brothers

International Team presented a performance.

One particular plot centered

on Shin Chul nim and conveyed

the firm determination of blessed children

to pierce through the darkness

and move on to become True Parents’

hope. Finally, martial art demonstrators

by members of the Martial Arts

Federation presented the essence of

Tongil Moo Do based on the four-position

foundation and the give-and-receive

action.

Goodwill Football

On August 22, at the Hanam Sports

Center, the Daejonggyo (a Korean native

folk religion) team secured the

winning trophy in the 2015 Religious

Leader’s Goodwill Football Tournament.

Second place went to the

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day

Saints. Finishing in third place was

the Sunchang Federation team. The

Family Federation team finished

fourth.

This was the fourth annual football

tournament. Creating an occasion for

religions to interact peaceably and

harmoniously is its purpose. Eight

teams competed, formed out of five

religious bodies—the Korean Buddhism

Taego Order, Korea Tenrikyo,

Daejonggyo, the Church of Jesus

Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and the

Family Federation for World Peace

and Unification.

Miracle Music Contest

FFWPU, CARP hosted the First

Sound of Miracle Music Contest,

which drew three hundred people to

the Seoul Galwol-dong CARP center.

Many musically talented Unificationists

expressed in their music the

inheritance of True Parents’ hearts

and traditions, and gave glory to

them as true children. Moreover, they

also inherited the culture of heart and

of filial piety on Hyo Jin nim’s foundation

of loyalty and filial piety.

First place went to the Cheonshim

Band, second place to 1 Over N, and

third place to Go Family. This event

became a starting point in advancing

the creative competence in cultural activities

among our members.

Aewon, a volunteer organization and

the Segye Times held the twenty-second

Seeds of Dreams Concert. On August

19, Moon Hoon Sook, Chairman

Cha of the Segye Times, and four hundred

other sponsors and families experience

this concert at the KT

Chamber Hall.

The Seeds of Dreams Concert,

which began in 2005, is a means to

provide disabled people that have

musical talent with opportunities to

learn, perform, and become self-reliant

as members of society.

Their beautiful music, deeply

moved audience members, who

cheered them on with applause as

they watched the performers, who

had overcome barriers to fulfill their

dreams. The Aewon Volunteer Organization

will continue to bring hope to

fulfill the dreams of disabled youth

with talent in the arts.

The dream of playing piano professionally

had eluded one student, who

lived in an orphanage. Yet the young

pianist was able to undergo piano lessons

and other music education

through Seeds of Dreams for six

months, played in Seeds of Dreams

concerts with Aewon and ultimately

entered university in a professional

music department. Other Seeds of

Dreams’ students with disabilities

have also been able to enter university,

study music and grow into competent

musicians.

Chairwomen Moon Hoon Sook

said, “It is so rewarding to see them

communicate, find happiness and improve

their lives through music. We

will continue to cultivate their dreams

through Seeds of Dreams concerts

and will not hold back in providing

these people hope as they strive to

build their lives.”

True Parents’ accomplishments

August 27 was the date of the opening

for an Exhibition Celebrating the

True Parents’ Life Achievements. A

ceremony of sorts took place to mark

the opening and True Mother attended

it. The exhibition was located

along the second floor lobby and corridors

of the Cheongshim Peace

World Center. It remained in place

until August 31.

True Mother arrived at the opening

amid loud applause from two

hundred spectators. In the first-floor

lobby, True Mother offered a dedication

prayer. “Father, please guide

these members to become Japanese

citizens who practice true love by

living for the sake of others, indemnify

everything that was not loyal to

the providence, and stand in the

center of the providential mainstream

as you have shown us! Father,

how hard have you worked

until blessed children that can fulfill

Heavenly Parent’s wish and True

Parents’ wish of one peaceful world,

a unified world, could be born? I am

keenly aware of all the hard work,

the sincere devotion and effort

Heaven has made to embrace humankind.

That devotion and effort

is now on exhibit here today. Following

the course that True Parents

have shown, please let all the members

of the Unification Church become

groups that will accelerate and

do their best to build Cheon Il

Guk…!”

While Father was still living,

work toward establishing

a peace prize

had begun. At Father’s

request, research was conducted

that in July 2007 resulted in a booklength

dissertation on the establishment

and operation of a global

peace prize. In a 2013 interview of

Kim Man Ho, then secretary-general

of the Wonmo Pyeongae Foundation,

he explained some of the

initial preparation, “We partake in

the award presentation ceremonies

and try to benchmark their methods,

standards and qualifications

for the awards. When we researched

the different awards given

in other countries and in Korea, we

looked at how the candidates were

chosen, how transparent the

process was and particularly at the

selection and judging committees.”

True Mother proposed the establishment

of the Sunhak Peace prize

in February 2013 and the preparatory

committee first met in January

of the following year. Two eminent

figures shared the first Sunhak

Peace Prize, and the US $1 million

that accompanied it, Dr. Modadugu

Vijay Gupta, an Indian scientist and

Anote Tong, president of Kiribati, a

Pacific Island nation.

Dr. Gupta, a seventy-six-year-old

biologist, has said, “There can be no

peace without food security in the

world. You cannot talk peace to a

hungry man.” This statement seems

to sum up his life’s work. He developed

an inexpensive and simple

method to do fish farming that even

the desperately poor could readily

employ to produce food for themselves

and for sale. He and his family

lived in a variety of nations in

order to teach poor people how to

gain a foothold in life by implementing

these freshwater aquaculture

techniques. These nations

include Laos, Vietnam, Bangladesh,

the Philippines and Thailand.

In a 2006 interview of Dr. Gupta

in Current Science magazine it

26 TRUE PEACE

Ceremony

emerged that Indians being mainly

vegetarian, their per capita intake of

fish is only four kilograms per year

against a global average of fifteen

kilograms. When asked, Dr. Gupta

had to admit, “My wife is a vegetarian,

so I eat fish only when I’m

away from home.” In his acceptance

speech, Dr. Gupta said, “I

would be failing in my responsibilities

as a husband and father if I do

not acknowledge the sacrifices my

wife and children have made over

the years to enable me to continue

my work while living and working

in remote areas of least-developed

and war-torn countries in spite of

threats to our lives.” Dr. Gupta’s

work is also widely acknowledged

for having empowered women

through allowing them to contribute

to their families’ welfare

through fish farming.

President Tong is the leader of an

island nation that seems certain to

be swallowed by rising sea levels.

He has become a fierce spokesman

against greenhouse gases and the

impending danger of climate

change. In 2005, he told an interviewer,

“At first I didn’t want to agitate

the public about something

they could not affect, but now we

have to prepare the public. Not to

be refugees—because that’s a word

we don’t like—but for relocation

with dignity. Our status is not at

our initiation and our churches are

now involved. All of our islands are

now involved looking at possible

options…. I find people are more

compassionate than governments.

We keep asking the international

community to act and to give more

focus to our part of the world because

you have done this to us; and

what are you going to do about it?

I’ve been waiting for an answer

quite some time and we are running

out of time.”

In his acceptance speech President

Tong said, “It will be remiss of

me if I do not pay tribute to the late

Dr. Sun Myung Moon and to you

Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, for the work

that you have done underpinned

by the ultimate aim of global peace

for all.

“Indeed if the whole world were

to embrace the visions of the late

Reverend Moon and Mrs. Moon,

promoting reconciliation, coexistence

and cooperation, the world

would certainly be a better and a

more peaceful world. And most

likely I would not be standing here

in front of you.

“Mr. Chairman, the last twelve

years have not been without challenges,

starting from when my people

chose me to guide them toward

a safe, secure and prosperous future.

Upon accepting that honor, I

also accepted the responsibility that

came with it, one of which is to ensure

that their voices, their issues,

were heard especially within the international

arena.”

I wish to begin by expressing my

deep appreciation to you, Dr. Hak Ja

brought us together today, a vision

that embraces the whole of humankind,

a vision that promotes and

supports global peace. For indeed,

peace and security are what we all aspire

to for our people, for our children,

our grandchildren and their

children. I truly believe that the prestigious

Sunhak Peace Prize, along with

this World Summit on Peace, will elevate

global thinking and (it is my very

dear hope) global action on a challenge

that poses the greatest danger to

life as we know it now.

The security threat

Our world, our planet, our one and

only home, is at a critical turning

point. Should we continue without

due consideration of the consequences

of our blind pursuit of profits

and short-term development gains,

we risk irreparable damage to our

planet, our one and only home. Irreparable

damage, which at the core

effects the lives of not only my people

but the rest of this global population.

During my earlier campaigns on

the subject of climate change, I was

asked (more to the point, admonished)

whether I was a scientist and

where the data were, the scientific formulae

that would back up my belief

that climate change was indeed happening.

I answered simply that I was

not a scientist but that I felt for my

people and more importantly, I experienced

with my people what was

happening, the impact on our livelihood,

the impact on our homes.

Ladies and gentlemen, my people,

living on low-lying atoll islands no

higher than three meters above sea

level, are now facing major challenges

never faced before from not only the

rise in sea levels, but as evidenced by

Cyclone Pam, extreme weather patterns.

Any high tide coupled with

strong winds wreaks havoc on our islands,

our homes, our villages. In

some parts of the country, whole villages

have had relocate due to severe

coastal erosion. Food crops have been

destroyed and the fresh water lens

(our communities’ source of drinking

water) contaminated by the intruding

seawater.

Indeed our islands, our homes,

may no longer be habitable or for that

matter exist within this century. Our

future is at stake, with the very real

loss of their homes and their identity

as a people and as a culture. Together

with other low-lying atoll island nations

such as Tuvalu, the Republic of

the Marshall Islands, Tokelau and the

Maldives, we are on the frontline of

this major calamity.

My people and my nation along

with our fellow small island atoll nations

can no longer afford to wait until

the world makes a decision on what

action to take against climate change.

Time is against us, with people’s future—

men, women and children,

whole cultures, whole communities,

villages, cities and nations—at stake.

Without exception, we all have a

moral obligation to do what we must

individually and collectively to ensure

the survival of our planet, our one

and only home.

However, ladies and gentlemen,

there is hope. It has been twelve years,

and in these last few years, I truly believe

that as a global community, we

have gone past debating whether climate

change is happening. It is indeed

encouraging to note the growing

momentum in the level of global acknowledgement

of the climate change

issue. Yes, there is acknowledgement;

yes, there is commitment at the global

level to address this issue. An issue

born of the actions of the whole of humankind,

yet an issue for which

global leadership and global accountability

are lacking, an issue that remains

peripheral to those with the capacity

and capability to address and

mitigate the advancement of climate

change.

Regrettably, it is those with the

least capacity and the least capability

who are bearing the brunt, bearing

the impact of a major peace and security

challenge that has the capacity to

wreak extensive damage, a peace and

security challenge that has the capacity

to wipe out whole nations, whole

cultures and identities, wipe out life

as we know it now.

My people continue to ask me,

what is it that they can expect from

the global community, will they have

a future as I-Kiribati [Kiribati citizen]?

Will they be able to remain on their

homeland, their ancestral land? It is a

plea, a cry for help that I cannot ignore

nor can I turn my back on.

Can we, as leaders, return today to

our people and be confident enough

to say, Yes, your existences, your lives

are important and we, leaders of the

global community, have formulated

options to ensure that no matter how

high the sea rises, no matter how severe

the storms get, there are credible

technical solutions to raise your islands

and your homes and the neces-

sary resources are available to ensure

that all will be in place before it is too

late.

Indeed, what options are available

for vulnerable countries like Tuvalu,

the Maldives, the Marshall Islands,

Tokelau and Kiribati? In Kiribati, we

have adopted a strategy that would

ensure that the country or parts of it

remain above sea level in whatever

form into the future. A number of options

for doing that have been proposed

to us, such as floating

islands—and why not? Also the possibility

of raising our islands from

their current height to heights above

the predicted sea-level rises – again

why not? I have had discussions with

the government of Korea, who have

indicated their willingness to pilot options,

to assess the potential technological

solutions for raising our

islands. Yes there is hope, but it is one

that we as a whole need to act on, and

act now.

The challenge of climate change

demands that we think outside the

bounds of convention, outside of our

comfort zones, because these are extraordinary

challenges and will definitely

call for extraordinary and

unconventional solutions!

However ladies and gentlemen, as

a government we have also acknowledged

the reality that whatever measures

we take to remain above the

rising seas and more severe weather

conditions they will not be able to accommodate

the current population

level. We do not have the scale of resources

required to do that, and it will

be most unlikely that the level of resources

needed will is forthcoming,

not unless a radical change occurs in

global thinking and commitment.

Relocation must therefore be part

of our strategy for adaptation and this

involves the preparation of our people

for such a possibility. With assistance

from our partners, we have

already begun the process of skills enhancement

and training of our young

people so that they will be qualified

and have the choice, if they wish to do

so, to migrate on merit as people with

dignity and confidence to a new environment.

For the sake of our children,

our grandchildren and their children,

it is imperative that we provide options,

options that are essential for the

security of their future, a future that is

safe and secure.

Whether we like it or not, providing

options for future of generations

means making sacrifices today. My

country, Kiribati, has often been referred

to as a small-island developing

state. We are however a very large

atoll ocean state with a total land area

of 811 square kilometers, dispersed

over 3.5 million square kilometers of

ocean, an area more than twice the

size of the largest U.S. state of Alaska.

As a large atoll ocean state, the

ocean plays a pivotal role not only in

the sustainable development of Kiribati

but in the very fabric of our lives.

The ocean is very much a part of our

daily existence, our culture and heritage.

We have peacefully coexisted

and have a deep spiritual connection

with the ocean and its biodiversity,

which not only provides for our daily

sustenance but also defines who we

are. For my country and for my people,

the ocean is our lifeblood, it sustains

us and it provides for us.

In recognition of the critical importance

of our ocean and ocean resources

for the future of our people,

we established in 2008 one of the then

largest Marine Protected Areas in our

part of the world, The Phoenix Island

Protected Area, or PIPA as it is commonly

referred to. As of January 1,

2015, all commercial fishing activities

was banned in PIPA.

PIPA covers more than 400,000

square kilometers of our nation repre-

senting, 11% of our total Exclusive

Economic Zone, about the size of California.

PIPA is listed as a UNESCO

world heritage site. It is the largest living

laboratory for the study of atoll

biodiversity, coral reefs in their pristine

environment, coral bleaching and

coral recovery. It is one of our responsive

strategies to the climate challenge,

to understand how atoll

ecosystems can adapt to this major

challenge.

Furthermore, the Phoenix Islands

Protected area is a major spawning

ground for tuna, so its closure will

also make a major contribution to the

conservation, the rejuvenation, of fish

stocks and to global food security. For

us, it is an investment in the future. It

is our contribution to humanity and

to the conservation and preservation

of marine life—not only for us, but for

the global community and for generations

to come. More importantly, it

signals our serious commitment to the

global community that sacrifices are

necessary and indeed can be made to

ensure the continued health of our

oceans for the common good.

You may also have heard that I

have called for a moratorium on new

coal mines and the extension of existing

coal mines—science, as confirmed

by the IPCC, dictates that for the

world to avoid catastrophic climate

change we must leave the vast bulk of

carbon reserves in the ground. Very

simply, the world needs to burn less

coal each year.

For my people, for my country, this

would signal a very positive step by

the global community toward slowing

the advancement of climate

change. It would be one step of many

more and may be the turning point by

which we can all look back and say,

Yes to our people, we have ensured a

safe and secure future for you and

your children. It is my sincere hope

that you who are with us today, will

add your voice and your support to

this call for no more new coal mines

and a halt to any further extension to

existing coal mines.

For those of us on the front line of

climate change, the impacts are happening

yesterday. For us, any incremental

rise in sea level threatens our

very existence, our very livelihood.

Time is of the essence. The urgency of

climate change as a global security

threat cannot be stressed enough.

The quiet onslaught of climate

change lulls us into a false sense of security,

into the belief that the cost of

addressing it now is far too high and

can be deferred to the next generation.

This makes it an even more deadly

and dangerous security challenge that

we should not ignore nor treat with

complacency. We have all experienced

to some extent the severity and the

frequency of changing weather patterns.

We can all understand that

when (not if) these climate-change-related

disasters grow more frequent,

the entire global community will suffer

from the conflicts, the tragedies

and the loss of development that follow.

We owe future generations more

than just acknowledgement of this

calamity. We owe them action that

will comprehensively address these

peace and security challenges facing

the most vulnerable, action that will

guarantee that the future of our global

community and our planet Earth will

be secured; action that guarantees that

no one will be left behind and most

importantly, urgent action to address

the security and existential challenges

from climate change for the most vulnerable

peoples in front-line states.

Indeed, we cannot do it alone and

one’s action in one’s nation should

not be in isolation from the rest of the

world. For as responsible global citizens

of this planet, which we share as

a home, our moral obligation is to ensure

its preservation and to ensure

that the future of our children, our

grandchildren and their children is

safe and secure. For their sake let us

do the right thing!

Lord Buddha once said that

the greatest disease for

mankind is “hunger.”

Today, poverty and hunger

are the most devastating problems

facing the developing world. Over

800 million, one in nine of the global

population, go to bed hungry every

day. Most of them, 13.5 percent of the

population, are in developing countries.

Micronutrient deficiencies,

which some people call “hidden

hunger,” affects more than 2 billion

people globally, one in three of the

global population. Some 250 million

children are at risk from vitamin A

deficiency and an equal number from

deficiency of minerals such as iron,

zinc and calcium. Nearly twenty-five

thousand children under the age of

five die every day, one third of them

due to malnutrition. These statistics

are difficult to absorb but are true.

The situation may further aggravate

with the spiraling food prices of the

last few years. We are witnessing this

bleak picture in the present world

that has the resources and knowledge

to avert such a disaster and fulfill the

fundamental right of people to adequate

food, freedom from hunger and

malnutrition.

World’s leaders in 2000, through

the Millennium Development Goals,

set a target of halving the hungry and

malnourished population by 2015,

this year. While countries have made

some progress, hunger and malnutrition

remain major problems for most

developing countries.

32 TRUE PEACE

THE FIRST SUNHAK PEACE PRIZE LAUREATES’ ADDRESSES

Small-Scale Farming,

Food Security and Peace

By Modadugu Vijay Gupta

The Sunhak Peace Prize recipient from India gave this is the presentation at World Summit 2015 on August 28.

Future food demand

While this is the prevailing situation,

let us briefly look at what the situation

will be in the future. Global population

has crossed the 7 billion mark.

For the first time in recorded history,

the population will have doubled in

one generation. It is expected to surpass

9 billion by 2050. We can understand

the enormity of the situation

from the fact that the projected population

trajectory toward 2050 indicates

we need a new city of 1 million inhabitants

every five days in developing

countries. The Food and Agriculture

Organization of the United Nations

estimates that to meet the demand of

the increasing population by 2050, we

need to increase food production by

60 percent globally; 90 to 100 percent

in developing countries. We must produce

more food in the next thirty-five

years than we produced in the last

eight thousand years. A fundamental

question for science and for all of us is

whether it is possible to increase food

production of this magnitude when (i)

resources are depleting, (ii) the impact

of climate change as a result of global

warming is expected to increase the

frequency of droughts and floods and

(iii) the benefits of green revolution

are diminishing. Research undertaken

by the International Food Policy Research

Institute indicates that many

crop yields will actually decrease by

25 percent in the next thirty-five years

due to climate change. If we are not

able to meet the projected demand for

food, the consequences will be increased

poverty and malnutrition in

developing countries leading to political

unrest.

We need to ask ourselves whether

the food insecurity we are witnessing

today is due to insufficient global

food production. Hunger and undernourishment

exist even in countries

with enough food to meet the needs.

Unless people have purchasing

power, they will not be able to access

food even if it is available. Economic

access to food happens only when

households generate sufficient income

to produce or purchase food. Hence,

food security has links to poverty reduction

and subsequent eradication.

Food security and peace

Poverty and hunger threaten peace

everywhere. We see them as underlying

causes of endemic conflict and

civil violence. All of us are aware of

the 2007–2008 food crisis when prices

rose dramatically worldwide causing

political and economic instability and

social unrest, pushing an estimated

105 million people into poverty in

low-income countries. While conflicts

cause food insecurity in some countries,

socio-economic inequities, unequal

distribution of other natural

resources are mainly responsible for

food insecurity. Calls for action to

eliminate hunger, poverty and injustice,

leading to social violence grow

louder every day. For lasting peace,

we need to address underlying issues

that deter sustainable development

and make society a fertile terrain for

conflict, such as food insecurity,

poverty and lack of human development.

According to the World Bank, the

high price of food and energy forces

many families to spend half to threequarters

of their income on food, leading

to potentially serious tensions and

social unrest in at least thirty-three developing

countries. (Those in the developed

world spend less than 15

percent on food.)

Poverty and deprivation are underlying

causes for endemic conflict and

civil violence. Much of this deprivation

is in rural areas where 70 percent

of world’s poor live on less than $1 a

day. They must be the priority target

for poverty reduction efforts and food

security.

I strongly believe that sustainable

peace, within a family, among communities,

religions or across political

borders can be achieved only when issues

of poverty and hunger are addressed.

Fish, food security, peace

In this context, let me mention briefly

my humble efforts over the last five

decades, looking at how aquaculture

can change the lives and livelihoods

of the rural poor by providing adequate

food- and nutrition-security,

through applying science to the needs

of the farming community in developing

countries including war-torn

countries such as Laos and least-developed

countries such as

Bangladesh.

September 2015 33

Dr. Gupta receives the Sunhak Peace Prize medal.

I will touch on the role fish play in

food security and indirectly in having

a peaceful world. When we think of

fish, we do not generally think of malnutrition

and high infant mortality

rates. That fish are a rich source of

protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins,

minerals and a major source of animal

protein to people in developing countries

is well known. Fish provides

over 4.5 billion people at least 15 percent

of their animal protein intake.

From an economic standpoint, fish is

by far the most internationally traded

commodity, with global trade estimated

at around US$160 billion per

annum. In many countries, foreign

currency earned through fish exports

goes toward imports of other food

items. In addition, fish farming is environmentally

friendly, compared to

production of other animal protein

such as beef and pork.

Changing weather patterns due to

global warming, urban development,

depletion of natural resources and

overfishing are emptying seas and

rivers of fish, affecting populations in

Asia and Africa, where the poor find

it difficult to obtain a regular supply

of protein food and are dependent on

fishing for their livelihoods. We need

to produce an estimated 30 million

additional tons of fish by 2030 to meet

current demands. Aquaculture must

meet much of this demand, because

the depletion of fish in oceans and

rivers via excessive exploitation.

Reverend Sun Myung Moon

rightly identified the potential of

oceans and other aquatic systems as

major sources for contributing to food

security and peace.

Reaching the unreached

Since the beginning of the twentieth

century, more food per capita has

been available than ever before, yet

nearly a billion people go hungry and

undernourished worldwide. We

waste over 30 percent of food produced,

roughly 1.3 billion tons per

year, between the production and

consumption stages. While the loss

takes place between production and

marketing in developing countries

due to lack of infrastructure for processing

and storage facilities, in developed

countries waste primarily occurs

between purchase and consumption.

Hence, adequate production is less of

a problem than access to food for the

poor. Unless we address poverty reduction

and increased access to food

in poorer communities, we will not be

able to solve the problem of food security.

Small-scale farmers produce

over 80 percent of global food and developing

countries account for over 90

percent of production. Thus, ensuring

the survival and livelihoods of smallscale

farmers is of utmost importance.

Going by the Chinese proverb,

“Give a man a fish, he eats for a day;

teach a man how to farm fish, he eats

every day,” my work over the years

has focused on reaching the unreached

with aquaculture technologies

and capacity building toward

sustainable development among resource-

poor, small-scale farmers in

different parts of the world. My first

efforts were to develop technologies

that could be sustained by the rural

poor and landless with the meagre resources

available to them. This meant

going to farmers, understanding their

social, cultural and economic realities

along with what natural resources

they are endowed with, and then developing

simple, low-cost, low-risk

technologies that could be adopted

and sustained by them. This approach

started in the 1970s in India, followed

by other Asian countries and subsequently

African countries. It has resulted

in multi-fold increase in fish

production, which laid the foundation

for what we call today the “Blue Revolution.”

For example, aquaculture

production, about 1.3 million tons in

1970s in India, increased to over 4.2

million tons. Likewise, aquaculture

production of around seventy-five

thousand tons in the 1980s in

Bangladesh has increased to over a

million tons. This innovation has not

only resulted in increased production

but also in improving and creating

livelihoods for millions of households

in rural areas.

Access to resources

Having developed technologies for

small-scale farmers, we looked at

ways of bringing the benefit of aquaculture

to the vast number of landless

people. Out of the over 1 billion people

involved in agriculture globally,

nearly half are landless and work as

34 TRUE PEACE

True Family members and other dignitaries during the introduction. The theme of the first Sunhak Peace Prize was the environment, particularly the ocean.

laborers. Of some 240 million children

who go to work globally, 60 percent

work in agriculture, including fisheries

and aquaculture. Poverty is the

root cause of these children working

in fields instead of going to school. To

address this issue to some extent in

our work, we joined hands with some

of the NGOs working at the grassroots’

level, formed large number of

groups of five to ten landless people,

motivated, trained and assisted them

in leasing public and private water resources

and started fish farming. The

technologies developed were so simple,

even children could do farming

activities without hindrance to their

education. This has brought unutilized

aquatic resources into use and

created livelihoods among landless

households. Many countries in Asia

and Africa are following this successful

approach.

Empowering women

We are all well aware of the role

women play on the global political

scene and in management of corporations

and industry. A number of role

models are here today. This situation

likely holds true only in urban settings.

In my work, we study many poor

rural communities in different countries.

In all of these communities, the

family is dependent on the meagre

earnings of a male family member.

Women are confined to their homes

and have no or few means of income.

In spite of many chores a woman performs

for the family, the husband says,

“My wife does not work,” because she

does not produce a cash income. Because

of this, rural women do not

have any say in running family affairs

nor have a face in society. Their calorie

intake is also 30 percent less than that

of men. They do not get enough to eat.

Our work involved helping rural

women contribute to their household

income and food security through

aquaculture. It was not easy. Much effort

went into motivating them.

Sometimes cultural or religious stigmas

came into play, but they saw

aquaculture’s benefits to the family,

there was no going back. This resulted

in increased household income, improved

nutrition and better education

for their children. Empowerment of

women within the family and in society

resulted. Further, studies show

that if woman farmers have the same

access to resources as men have, agricultural

output in developing countries

would increase by 2.5 to 4.0

percent. Another study shows that

equalizing the statue of women with

that of men in South Asia and Sub-Saharan

Africa can reduce malnourishment

among 13.4 million and 1.3

million children respectively. Our

studies show that when a woman becomes

an earner, security and happiness

increase in the family and the

children’s education improves. These

studies prove the importance of a

woman’s innate capacity as farmers,

innovators and household managers

in rural communities.

Application of biotechnology

Regarding the “green revolution,” genetic

enhancement and hybridization

of strains has kept millions of people

from starvation. With fish, not much

of domestication occurred, especially

in tropical countries, so little capacity

existed for genetic research. Hence,

our work through networking and

partnerships between advanced research

organizations in developed

countries and institutions in developing

countries resulted in human resources

development and

institutional strengthening in developing

countries in Asia, Pacific and

Africa. This has resulted in development

of a number of fast growing

species of fish that are contributing to

increased fish production in the developing

countries.

Closing remarks

The Blue Revolution is in its early

stages and we need to do much more

if it is to contribute to food and nutritional

security and improve the livelihoods

of millions of the rural poor.

For this to happen, countries need appropriate

strategies, development

plans and allocation of adequate resources.

Let us all join our hands in addressing

the issues of poverty, hunger and

malnutrition to make the world a

peaceful one for every one to live happily.

Dr. Gupta is considered the father of the Blue

Revolution.

A wider view of the audience in Seoul<s Intercontinental Hotel where the Sunhak Peace Prize Award Ceremony took place

The FFWPU International

Headquarters explained the

background and timing for

this pivotal yearly meeting

with the following words: “The third

Memorial of True Father’s seonghwa

is a cosmically unprecedented period

in history; it marks the period when

the mourning ends. In the oriental

tradition, when a parent suddenly

ascended, the eldest son would devotedly

prepare the parent’s grave

and set up a mourning tent west of

that grave. The son would then perform

the greatest act of filial piety by

paying heartfelt respects to the deceased

parent for three years. Even

though all of humanity should have

demonstrated such attendance, True

Mother personally offered such devotion

on behalf of all humanity (the

children) and on the basis of her devotion,

she bequeathed unto us the

foundation of ‘Forgive, Love,

Unite.’”

Overview

The most significant moment of this

year’s assembly was presented on the

schedule as the September 4 “Reaffirmation

Ceremony”; that is, preparing

one’s heart, bowing to True Mother,

and attending her with one heart as

her guidance and grace flowed within

the spirit of each person present. We

are confident that this was a spiritual

turning point for all those on hand

that day and that her guidance will be

pivotal to the development of each

national church. True Mother’s

daughter, our international president,

Sun Jin Moon, also poured out her

heart to the leaders that had come

from nations around the world.

An important aspect of the meeting

was covered by the strategy presentation

for the victory of Vision 2020, presented

by Cho Sung Il, the

secretary-general of the international

headquarters. Participants also took in

four presentations on True Parents’

importance and value as seen from a

variety of perspectives. These leaderparticipants

will return to their nations

with a deeper understanding of

the importance of the third seonghwa

anniversary and of the True Parents’

accomplishment since Foundation

Day. Additionally, the leaders heard an

explanation about the Sunhak Hak

Peace Prize from Dr. Thomas Walsh in

his capacity as chairman of the Sunhak

Peace Prize Foundation, regional

reports from regional presidents and a

report on the five organs of the Cheon

Il Guk Constitution. They also took

part in sporting events, worship service

and a candlelight prayer.

Internal foci

The participants grappled with four

issues in this Cheon Il Guk Leaders

Special Assembly. They reconsidered

the meaning and value of True Father’s

ascension and the significance

36 TRUE PEACE

Preparing to Realize

True Parents’ Vision

Sun Jin Moon, FFWPU international president, opening the 7568 Cheon Il Guk Leaders Special Assembly

of the third memorial of his

seonghwa. They gained information

to disseminate a deeper appreciation

and understanding of True Parents’

stature. They used the opportunity

to discuss internal separatist activities,

and they delved into ideological

and structural means to facilitate

closer harmony among Cheon Il

Guk leaders.

Educational materials were developed

by the Human Resources Center

within the FFWPU International

Headquarters, while the environment

and overall assembly was envisaged

and brought to life by the members of

the headquarters that act as True

Mother’s secretariat.

All of this was in pursuit of enhancing

the abilities of true leaders of

Cheon Il Guk through inheriting True

Parents’ substantial word.

Some highlights

On September 2, in her opening address,

Sun Jin Moon, the FFWPU international

president, captured the

crux of our personal quest at this time

by saying, “Please continue to study

and pray about the history and context

of True Mother’s life course with

True Father. In this way, you will

come to a deeper understanding of

the truth that True Mother is True Father’s

eternal partner and that the position

of True Parents cannot be compromised.

No one can reject True

Mother’s absolutely unified position

without undermining the absolute

value of True Father’s position. If we

reject either parent we negate our

own life. We must understand our

true origin if we are to become true

sons and daughters.”

Dr. Andrew Wilson, who is perhaps

best known as a professor on

the Hebrew Bible at Unification Theological

Seminary, spoke about five

key aspects of Father’s mission and

how Mother’s success in her own

course was essential to True Parents’

overall success. Those aspects were

completing the mission that Jesus left

unfulfilled; paying retribution for

what was lost through the Fall and

fallen history; paving the way for the

salvation of human beings; opening

Cheon Il Guk; and ultimately liberating

God.

Particularly trenchant were Dr.

Wilson’s observations on Mother’s

personal agency in pursuit of True

Parents’ joint mission. True Mother

was not just along for the ride.

Demonstrably, she was conscious that

of all her life’s training and experiences

had culminated, under God’s

guidance, in her meeting Father and

she acted within the environment of

that consciousness. Her obedience to

True Father was an extension of her

life’s obedience to Heaven and it was

given freely of her own volition. In

the same way that God often had not

explained his intent or the importance

of what he was asking Father to

do, Father trusted Mother with important

providential missions without

explaining these in detail. Thus, it

was incumbent upon Mother to exert

great effort and undergo difficult,

painful experiences, struggling toward

eventual success, propelled by

her trust in True Father and her faith

in God. This perspective on the relationship

among God and True Parents

not only highlights the

difficulties of their life courses but

makes tangible that love was central

to achieving the great providential

advancements that have taken place

in the short span covering True Parents’

earthly lives.

It is our expectation that as your

leaders return to their respective fields

of activity, they will have much with

which to inspire and guide the frontline

members on whom so much depends.

This was based on material received from the

FFWPU International Headquarters.

To complete God’s providence

of restoration, True Parents

have taught and proclaimed

the word for all people on earth and

in heaven. The speeches that True

Parents have left us throughout the

years are comprised by the over

seven-hundred-volume book series,

The Sermons of the Reverend Sun

Myung Moon. True Mother said to extract

the most essential, core material

from those books and make it so that

from generation to generation people

can treasure and read it. To honor her

wishes, the Committee for the Compilation

of True Parents’ Words published

a revised version of Cheon

Seong Gyeong, published Pyeong Hwa

Gyeong and dedicated them on Foundation

Day in 2013; we follow today

with Chambumo Gyeong.

In an easily accessible manner,

Chambumo Gyeong presents True Parents’

teachings on their poignant life

courses, including their births, divine

summons, Holy Wedding and overall

providential achievements for the salvation

of humankind and the realization

of global peace. Chambumo

Gyeong is a record of the blood, sweat

and tears True Parents have shed as

they sacrificed themselves to achieve

the God’s will, and it can be said to be

a report of the ultimate victory of

God’s providence. Moreover, as it

contains the most important substance

of the providence that God

strove to fulfill through True Parents,

it will become the eternal cornerstone

and milestone of Cheon Il Guk.

We have not only published the

Korean Chambumo Gyeong but also the

Japanese and English versions. We

were able to produce a more completed

scripture especially since True

Mother gave much guidance in the

Chambumo Gyeong compilation

process. Once again, we thank True

Mother.

Now that the Cheon Il Guk scriptures

are finished, I cannot fully express

in words how fortunate we are

to have True Parents’ teachings in

these three beautiful scriptures and

to be able to pass them on from generation

Cheon Il Guk scriptures include the

core material from the Eight Great

Textbooks and from all True Parents’

post-2000 speeches. Anyone can easily

the way is now open to live by True

Parents’ teachings. In addition, Cheon

Seong Gyeong gives a clear explanation

of God’s original essence and

Pyeong Hwa Gyeong presents the way

to realize world peace in detail.

Hence, with just these scriptures, the

international, interfaith and interracial

ideal world that God and all

human beings long for can be realized.

The Truth Illuminates

Their Path for Us

Completing the

Third Great Scripture

During the offering this holy scripture, several key figures spoke. Kim Min Ha is president of the Segye Times, Kim Young Hwi and Lee Jae

Seok are the president and vice-president, respectively, of the Scripture Compilation Committee.

Chambumo Gyeong testifies to

True Parents, who successfully

pioneered the path of restoration.

True Father came as the third

Adam, in the Second Coming, and

with True Mother, the substantial

Holy Spirit, became the substantial

True Parents who came to save all

human beings in body and soul.

After True Parents’ Holy Wedding

in 1960, the next seven years were a

period to complete the foundation of

an original family. True Parents focused

on the family for the first

seven-year course, which for the first

time in history was on the completion

stage. As they went through the

seven-year course, they achieved the

True Family, which had been lost at

the time of the Fall, and on January

1, 1968, they proclaimed the historic

first God’s Day. This was a day

when True Parents could become

one body with Heavenly Parent as

His entity so that they could arrive

on earth.

Moreover, the day that we received

salvation through True Parents as true

children came based on historical moments

such as True Parents’ Holy

Wedding on April 11, 1960, and when

True Parent’s became one body with

Heavenly Parent and substantiated

him on January 1, 1968. This corresponds

to Christians, through belief in

Jesus, receiving salvation through

Jesus’ resurrection after his crucifixion

and his having bled for the redemption

of the people two thousand years

ago. Similarly, the grace of salvation

for all human beings to be restored as

true children by True Parents began

based on True Parents’ Holy Wedding,

the fulfillment of the four position

foundation in True Parents’

family, and the completion of a True

Family during the first seven-year

course.

In Chambumo Gyeong, True Parents

are showing us the path of the Principle

that human beings must take. In

other words, they created a model of

a true family for the people to follow.

By achieving a true ideal family for

the first time since the creation of the

world, True Parents have established

a model of the life that human beings

are striving to reach. Human beings

should love God, love people, love

the creation and emulate, as one’s

own principles, the lives and traditions

of True Parents, who have lived

for the sake of others. Therefore,

human beings should inherit True

Parents’ traditions and become true

parents themselves as they fulfill

their responsibilities as tribal messiahs.

Our dear True Mother invested

her whole heart and soul to

take on, develop and make

sublime True Father’s great unfinished

work and to fulfill his dying

wish successfully. She is working

hard and dedicatedly to begin an age

of renaissance and unification. I am

certain that Chambumo Gyeong, which

is being displayed for the world

today, will become a wonderful

guide to humanity to build true families,

true love, peace, justice, truth,

and clean consciences in that it contains

the vivid voices of Reverend

Moon and Mrs. Moon, who sacrificed

everything for humanity with

true love.

Moreover, you are with us today

for this significant occasion to dedicate

this great scripture, which has

been compiled with the world’s

highest standard of structure and organization—

having extracted the

gem-like core of all Reverend Moon’s

public and private speeches.

Since the beginning of history,

countless religions have had their

own scriptures, but Chambumo

Gyeong has broader and deeper messages,

with a quality and quantity

that others cannot equal. Even on the

external side one is struck with admiration.

I offer my deepest congratulations

for holding the publication

ceremony of Chambumo Gyeong,

which contains invaluable words and

achievements to be passed on forever.

The Compilation Committee members,

centered on Chairman Kim

Young Hwi and President Kim Seog

Byeong, honored True Mother’s

wishes and her inspiration and decision

related to this great project.

Today I humbly request that we

become one in mind and will with

God and His works, raising deafening

shouts with firm determination to

actively follow the road of true love,

peace, justice, and truth that Reverend

Moon has shown us and to fulfill

our roles at the center. Especially,

no one for any reason, to say the least,

should harm True Parents’ bright

achievements, honor, and glory,

which they have accomplished

through blood sweat and tears

throughout their lives. We must

firmly resolve to adopt, develop and

make sublime these things…. Lastly,

in accordance with the age of women

in the twenty-first century, Dr. Hak Ja

Han Moon possesses true love, peace,

sensitivity, imagination, delicateness,

firmness and decisiveness. In regard

to the unfolding eternal future, she is

a leader who encompasses an honored

symbol of truth, goodness,

beauty and love. Let us unite centered

on Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon and

fulfill our responsibility and mission

with absolute filial love, absolute loyalty,

absolute obedience, and absolute

integrity as true sons and

daughters.

40 TRUE PEACE

TESTIMONY

Over the following pages are personal testimonies on True Father’s teaching methods from Lee Sang Hun

(1914–1997) founding president of the Unification Thought Institute; Mrs. Ishii Tomiko, an early member and

wife of the sixth president of HSAUWC Japan; Kajikuri Gentaro (1937–2012) the twelfth president of HSAUWC

Japan; and Tyler Hendricks, US church president (1991–2000).

True Father’s Method for

Teaching Disciples

Iwas born into a Confucian family

and joined the church in 1956

when I was forty-three. If you

look at the newspapers from

that time, you will see I joined the

church when we had a bad reputation.

When I read the newspapers, I

was not worried about the rumors but

only wondered whether the teachings

were the truth or not. Someone that

had heard Divine Principle from Eu

Hyo Won (the first church president)

led me to the Unification Church

headquarters.

When I was a student, for a time I

had been engaged in the communist

movement, so I understood their materialistic

view of history. When I

heard the Principle of Restoration, I

realized that it was the Unificationist

view of history and decided to join

the church.

Teaching via hypothesis

Through joining the church, I was

able to answer the various questions I

had peripherally, but I was unable to

fully solve problems with the Divine

Principle only. Hence, I would go to

Father and directly ask him questions.

When several people were in the

room Father would speak to everyone

and occasionally what he said would

answer my questions. Many members

had difficulty understanding when he

spoke ideologically, but usually I was

able to understand. When I asked a

question, he would sometimes explain

in detail to me exclusively.

What moved me deeply was not

just that he perfectly and explicitly

solved life’s difficult questions but

that he bore boundless compassionate

love toward all people on earth, as

well as many historical righteous people

and prophets. I did not see Father

as I did any worldly human being.

This person had a repository of wisdom

and was a holy man who possessed

boundless compassionate love.

He was the Messiah who had come to

save human beings as God in the

flesh. Therefore, deep in my heart, I

had determined to systematize this

person’s ideology and spread it to the

world, primarily as a means to testify

to the world that he was the Messiah.

Since many other people in the world

would have questions as I had, I

thought they should be saved quickly.

I noted many things during the

early stages of the Unification Church;

one in particular was that Father

would never command someone individually.

This was deeply impressive.

If he wanted to command Kim

so-and-so or Lee so-and-so to do

something, he would speak to everyone

at a meeting or a service where

many were present and say what Unification

Church members must do.

Commanding someone directly

would mean he had personally intervened.

Because we are still imperfect,

he could not directly intervene in

human beings’ lives in the imperfect

stage. On the practical side alone, if

Father directly commanded a member

and the person responded accordingly,

that would be fine, but if the

member did not, an indelible condition

would attach to the person for

that member’s entire life for not having

followed Heaven’s command.

Even though, as they say, if one repents,

the future will be better, the

error for not obeying Heaven’s command

would remain on his spiritual

résumé. Thus, I realized that Father

did not directly interfere for the member’s

sake. If he wanted to give a direct

command, he would use

hypothetical expressions. I will give

an example.

A university professor who joined

the church would brag to show off his

excellence. One night, Father filled a

glass with flour and poured water

into it. Of course, the water all spilled

out. Everyone asked why Father had

done this. They thought it strange. If

something is in a container, you can

no longer put anything else in it. Similarly,

if you want to receive truth you

must empty your mind completely. If

you hold on to your own knowledge

without emptying your mind, no

matter how wonderful Heaven’s truth

is, it will not go in. Had Father told us

this, hearing it directly would have

been good, but if we did not respond

to it, a condition would arise. Thus, he

expressed it abstractly by allowing

water to overflow a glass filled with

flour.

Father often used hypothetical,

conditional expressions. He would explain

what would happen if someone

did something. For instance, he commanded

a Mr. Kim by saying that if

Mr. Kim went out witnessing, he

would achieve amazing results.

When I met that Mr. Kim later, I

told him I did not understand why Father

had expressed it like that. He responded

that it had been a command

to go witnessing. At that moment, I

came to a realization. By speaking abstractly

about a possibility, Father was

conveying his determination: This will

happen, so prepare! I am giving this

example to cast light on the fact that I

did not realize at first that Father had

issued commands in such a way even

about Unification Thought.

Father acted with purpose

In 1958, when Father came through

September 2015 41

True Father Guided Me to Realize

My Portion of Responsibility

By Lee Sang Hun

the city of Gunsan, where I joined the

church, he spoke to about seven or

eight people about how the era of

Unificationism and of Unification

Thought was coming. Though other

people heard the speech, it made the

deepest impression on my mind because

I had particular interest in Unification

Thought. From then on, I

believed that such an era would

come, but being in a local church, I

naturally thought that executive

members in Seoul would unite and

work hard under Father’s guidance

and establish this new era. I never

imagined that this era of Unificationism

and of Unification Thought had

anything to do with me. In other

words, I realized too late that Father

had commanded me using hypothetical

expressions.

For about six years after I joined

the church, Father never mentioned a

single word about anticommunism or

gaining victory over communism.

Thus, I only thought of Father as a

purely Christian leader who came to

save humanity. I never dreamed he

was an anticommunist leader and a

leader seeking to win over communism.

He had never said one word

about anticommunism. Thus, no need

arose for me to tell anybody I had

been in the communist movement, so

I never did. I did not think about it at

all. I merely devoted my life to faith,

in a state where I had forgotten past

experiences completely.

Then in 1960, Father commanded

many members to give testimonies at

his birthday celebration. I prayed inside,

“Please do not make me give a

testimony!” Listening to other people’s

testimonies is quite beneficial

and necessary, but giving my own testimony

made me feel as if I were

bragging about myself. The morning

passed and I relaxed, but when we

met again in the afternoon, Father

suddenly called on me to give a testimony

about a twenty-one-day fast. I

thought, “Even prayers are no good!”

as I approached the podium.

I had done the fast from December

1, 1959, at a member’s recommendation,

so that I could experience God’s

heart. At the time, Father would

sometimes say in his sermons that if

we did not experience God’s heart it

would be hard for us to go to heaven.

Therefore, many people told me that

if such a critical person as me did not

fast and pray, especially to offer

prayers challenging God to reveal

himself, experiencing God’s heart

would be difficult. Out of desperation,

I took decisive action and fasted. On

the night of the last day, I was able to

experience a small part God’s heart

and wept bitterly for God’s pitiful

state of endless sadness and suffering

to save human beings with his infinite

love. I gained a little understanding of

why Father wept so much. This was

the thrust of my testimony.

That night, Father called me to the

front again. This time he commanded

me to give a testimony about my

being in the communist movement. I

had no choice but to give a brief testimony,

but wondered how he knew,

when I had told no one. I also wondered

why he had me give that testimony,

since Father never did

anything unrelated to the providence.

Until then, I had been researching

many things about Father. I knew he

never spoke nor acted carelessly. He

always spoke on matters related to

leading the members or God’s will. I

concluded that Father did not speak

of or act on meaningless things unrelated

to the providence. The fact that

he had me give a testimony had providential

import. I could not help wondering

what that was. I had never told

anyone that I had been part of the

communist movement as a student.

How did Father know? He suddenly

commanded me to give a testimony

on the communist movement so there

must be a providential reason. What

was the providential reason he had

asked me to speak? I could not solve

this for a long time.

42 TRUE PEACE

Dr. Lee attending True Parents in the early days

True Father arrived in Japan

on January 28, 1965. At that

time, though it was the first

time I had met him,

through Teacher Lee Jong Ok, I received

a letter from True Father. That

letter included “With a parental

heart, become a servant and raise

many people.” This was a high-level

task for someone lowly like me.

However, I was made very happy by

the thought that Father had expectations

for such a lowly person as me.

True Father’s purpose of visiting

Japan was to dedicate a holy ground.

Out of all the countries in the world,

the first place to decide a holy

ground was Japan. From Mrs.

Nishikawa, I was told to go around

with True Father to choose the holy

ground, so I went around with him.

Eight places had been chosen for

Japan but we could not go to the last

place, Sendai, Sapporo. The places I

went to were in Tokyo, Nagoya,

Oosaka, Takamatsu, Hiroshima, and

Fukuoka, these six places. By the

way, we travelled with Mrs.

Nishikawa and Mrs. Sakurai to

Sendai and Sapporo. In Nagoya, we

rode the newly invented bullet train.

Those who rode the bullet train were

True Father, Teacher Choi Won Pok,

Teacher Nishikawa (Nishikawa

Masaru, the first missionary to Japan

from Korea; Korean name, Choi

Bong Choon) Teacher Kuboki and I. I

sat opposite True Father with a slight

space between us. While we were

having a meal, True Father asked,

“Tomi-chan, do you want to eat a little

bit?” and handed me his lunch

box. Normally, because it would be

too high an honor, one would normally

say, No, thank you; that’s all

right. Yet, counter to what I would

usually do, I accepted it, replying,

“Thank you for the food.” At that

time, we were in a parent–child relationship,

so I was able to receive it

honestly. Then True Father said,

“Give me some of yours, too, Tomichan.”

From my half-eaten lunch

box, nothing remained to reasonably

offer, but I handed him my lunch

box. Father took one thing from the

lunch box. To this day, I do not know

why Father did this, but he may have

been trying to loosen up my heart,

which was feeling nervous. My first

impression of True Father is that he

seemed like the pro wrestler, Riki

Dozan (real name, Momota Mit-

True Father

Gradual realizations

Two years later, in 1962, at midnight

when Father’s birthday began, he

started to speak. Sometime between

1:00 and 2:00 AM, he brought the

thirty-six-couple blessing group together

and said, “From now on leaders

must learn to win over communist

theory.” For the first time, the shocking

realization came to me that Father

was anti-communist and desired

communism’s defeat.

I wondered, was hating communists

acceptable for religious people?

According to the Principle, in the end

democracy and communism must

fight to resolve Abel and Cain’s antagonistic

relationship. Father, who

was to practice God’s love on earth,

would love even the communists.

However, for God’s providence to

unfold on earth, he must fight communism

even against his will. For

that reason, loving communists and

fighting against communist theory

were separate issues.

I went to bed after staying up almost

all night. When I woke, President

Eu called me to say, “The only

person who can do the things that Father

spoke of last night is you, because

you have experience with the

communist movement.” At that moment,

I realized why Father had me

give that testimony. By indirectly

commanding me, he had criticized

communism and he had let others

know of my experiences.

In this way, Father guided us to realize

our own personal portion of the

overall responsibility by speaking

generally, never by commanding us

personally. That was also the style of

the providence at the time. Father first

had me give the testimony, and then

said we should gain the ability to win

over communists. On that basis, I understood

my role through President

Eu. However, Father had spoken publically

to thirty-six couples; he had not

given me a personal command. President

Eu, the one in charge, had heard

what Father said and thought someone

should take the lead in response

to that command. The problem was

whom to choose. In the end, he felt

guided to choose a specific person.

I finally realized why Father had

me give a testimony two years previously

and understood for the first time

what he had meant when he spoke

four years earlier, in 1958, about the

impending age of Unification Thought

and what he was now commanding

me to do. I didn’t realize until later

that his speaking hypothetically about

the coming age of Unification Thought

had caused me to feel a personal sense

of responsibility and a realization that

establishing a theory of Unification

Thought and working for victory over

communism were my missions.

In 1965, True Parents and their

entourage visited Japan. At that

time, I was in the national headquarters’

General Affairs Department.

Father, as soon as he

arrived, went onstage and immediately

began to cry out in prayer.

We were finally able to meet the

person whom we had long awaited.

Though I had waited for two years,

Christianity had waited continuously

for two thousand years. In his sermons,

every time he mentioned Jesus,

tears overflowed his eyes. The understanding

came to me: This person’s

heart is the same as Jesus’.

Unavoidably, our history being

what it is, to be honest, the first impression

Father made on me was like

that of a construction company boss.

He was someone that had gone

through many hardships and genuinely

understood other peoples’ suffering.

This is what I thought. Perhaps

if I had been in the Yakuza (mafia), I

would have seen him as a Yakuza

boss. To Christians, he was of course

the returning Lord.

At that time, I was spiritually open

and able to see an aura behind people.

Based on the aura’s size, depth and

radiance, I was able to evaluate a person.

Teacher Nishikawa’s aura was

amazing. Father’s, radiating in a shining,

golden color, was exceptional. As

a wave of spirits of that golden hue

engulfed the entire hall, brothers and

sisters there began to shiver as if a

deeply moving sensation had overwhelmed

them. They began to cry.

Tears as a river flowed.

Someone tried to ask a question,

but the moment he raised his hand,

“Yes!” Father responded, “Leave that

question for later” though no remark

had been made. Father knew what

kind of question it was. This surprised

me.

There is more: Before going to

sleep, I entered the hallway next to

Father’s room and prayed. The following

morning during breakfast, he

told us, “Yesterday, someone was

praying in the hallway.” I was once

again surprised; he was aware that I

was praying on the other side of the

wall.

One day, when Father was taking a

walk alone, we came to be standing

face-to-face. No one else was in the

area. A smile—meant for me—came

across his entire face. That meeting

alone is a memory I will never forget

for my entire life.

He asked, “What do you think of

teacher?” To which I replied, “Second

Coming!” He muttered, “Second

Coming, huh…” while looking far

into the distance, seemingly deep in

thought. Around that time, in Japan,

we still called him “Big Teacher.” We

say, “A bushi (a Japanese samurai war-

suhiro, an adoptee of Korean ethnicity,

1924–1963). I felt that he was such

a great person on an unimaginable

scale. It reminded me of when I was

little and my father first took me to

see the ocean, the unimaginable wide

vastness of which the Shinano River,

which flowed through Niigata, my

hometown, could not compare. At

that time, we called Teacher

Nishikawa “Papa” but after meeting

True Father, Teacher Nishikawa

seemed small and more like an older

brother than a father. I might of have

just seen it spiritually. Looking at the

three wrinkles on Father’s forehead, I

thought, “Normally, wrinkles form

from hard work for oneself or for

one’s own family, but this person has

been working hard for others and

formed these wrinkles.” As I was

serving True Father, I had the opportunity

to observe him up close. True

Father’s lips and the area around his

mouth were damaged. I later came to

learn that before he came to Japan, he

had gone around Korea continuously

teaching Heavenly Parents’ message.

I think it was in 1965, when I was

cleaning the table in the room where

True Father slept. I heard True Father

snoring. Though a screen divided the

area with the table and the bed were,

from the sound I looked in the direction

where he was resting and his

sleeping figure came to my eyes. I

was surprised. While holding an English

book in his left hand with his arm

raised in the air, he slept and snored

loudly. Ordinarily, an arm holding a

book would be in the air; otherwise,

from its own weight, the book would

fall from one’s fingers. It was as if I

were seeing some strong aspect of his

heart: We see him as our Teacher but

it is not as if naturally he would have

a sense for English. He might not

learn it in the way that young people

can. In this way, Father was studying

very hard.

Already, Father had with him

Teacher Choi Won Pok, who spoke

English fluently. I did not think he

needed to study English, but True Father

apparently thought he did.

“Just take it as if you were born to

do this” is what True Father says but

True Father’s life was already such a

life. True Father is an always serious

and always a life-risking person.

Mrs. Ishii received the blessing among the

forty-three-couple blessing group.

We first-generation

members were adult

learners. We were like

children who at a certain

point gained minds of their own

and therefore had to make decisions

and act on them in order to learn. Because

of that, our best learning was

not in the classroom but on the street.

That’s where Father learned, and

that’s where he sent us. But first he

had to convince us to go there, and

not just go there, but go there with no

self, with nothing but the love of God.

One important lesson to learn was,

What is my life mission? I see Father

as using a Socratic method, where the

teacher asks the questions that draw

out the answer the student already

knows. In this case, the teacher put

me into an environment that drew out

the answer I already knew. One great

environment, of course, was MFT

(mobile fundraising teams).

Two educational testimonies here:

The first was at the end of a weekend

workshop at Barrytown in 1975. It

rior) would die for the sake of one

who understands himself.” I realized

that this person, who understood his

past, present, and future, was one

whom even a bushiwould lower himself

to. Though in my student days I

was taught that budo (martial arts)

meant obtaining the truth with one’s

whole being, this person was a one

that revealed what the truth is and

even taught others how to resolve the

truth; that is, not to take revenge over

the truth but to love one’s enemy. Father

himself forgave and loved Japanese

people toward whom he had felt

resentment. Father, to save Japan, had

done a forty-day fast after sending

Mr. Nishikawa to Japan as a missionary.

Japanese members fell in love

with Father’s broad smile, as it filled

us with his true love. The moment he

smiled at me, my thoughts soared and

I decided, “Let’s follow this man!” In

this way, I, too, decided to follow the

returning Lord and become his disciple.

In the 1970s, the Japanese government

continually denied Father a visa.

The Japanese government’s refusal,

compounded by Father’s imprisonment

at Danbury, became official. Not

as a political matter, but under Japanese

case law, anyone that has spent

more than a year in prison comes into

conflict with Japanese policy and is

denied entry into the country. Though

Father could not enter Japan, Japan

received his sincere heart. The Japanese

Unification Church foundation is

unshakable, and it will continue to

grow.

Father protects Japan; he gave his

all to make it possible for Japan to

live. I directly saw this aspect of Father’s

heart. Even now, he exerts effort

for Japan’s benefit. Japan received

such favors and responded with disrespect;

a country that opposes God

will not prosper. With Japan’s collapse,

people’s hearts would be lost.

Having done wrong, Heavenly Law

dictates that a nation must pay indemnity.

If the Unification Church

members were not in Japan, Japan already

would have faced decimation.

We have to become a Japan that gives

back as much love as we receive from

our Heavenly Parent.

Rev. Kajikuri (1937–2012) received the blessing

among the forty-three-couple blessing

group.

True Parents during visits to Japan were able to guide the members personally.

Revelations from the

Horizontal God

By Tyler Hendricks

was a big workshop, with fifty or

more New York youth, brand new to

our church. I had heard through the

grapevine that many MFT members

in America from other countries were

leaving for immigration reasons and

wondered what was going to happen

to the MFT. What happened was Father

came to speak to these young

people who had just finished their

first weekend workshop. I was a

group leader, watching from the sidelines.

Father gathered them on the

soccer field, in the lovely sunshine. He

spoke for an hour, perhaps, with Col.

Han interpreting. Father step by step

explained, with the most exquisite

logic, God’s will for the universe, arriving

at the undeniable conclusion

that the only thing that any human

being of integrity, faith and love

would ever want to do with his life

would be to go to MFT, right now, this

evening.

Now, I didn’t count noses, but as

far as I could see, the result of this astounding

message was that each of

these brand new workshop graduates

signed up at that moment for MFT. I

thought, whoa, this is, like, dangerous.

But then it happened to me.

Maybe six months later, at a 6 am

Belvedere Sunday service, Father’s

talk turned to the subject of fundraising,

and he kindly issued the invitation

to anyone in the audience who

felt so moved to join up with the MFT

right then and there (Never mind

your current mission or central figure,

it’s just you and me and God.). I

didn’t feel pressure, I didn’t feel his

gaze, I just felt, yep, this is the right

thing for me to do. And I was off—little

realizing that that step was a watershed

moment toward UTS and a

Ph.D. and all that has become of my

life. And everything I experienced on

MFT—that was Father’s education.

Speed and intent

Father is famous for long sermons,

but here’s a counterpoint to that. After

a long sermon at Belvedere on a Sunday

morning, Father finished, we had

the closing prayer, Mother joined him

onstage and they started their usual

walk through the middle of the audience

and out to the driveway. About

three steps from the stage, Father suddenly

stopped and said, “Wait a

minute, I didn’t cover what I wanted

to talk about today.” He stood right

there and in three minutes gave the

most concise, clear, organized, erudite,

principled statement I have ever

heard. It was like, boom, boom, boom,

thesis, argument, conclusion, signed,

sealed, delivered—in three minutes.

He reached the conclusion, and he

and Mother proceeded to their car.

I’m thinking, why doesn’t Father just

come and speak for three minutes, say

what he wants to say, and go? Answer:

because he wanted to touch my

life.

Mother touched my life as well,

one day in the “old dining room” at

East Garden, with a bunch of Ph.D.

students. It must have been the day

that Father entered, looked for a

minute at us brainy brains with our

brains full of what Hyo Jin nim called

“brain candy,” and said as his opening

sentence, “You believe in the spirit

world, don’t you?” Dead silence. I’ve

been thinking about how to answer

ever since.

So we’re at lunch, and Mother didn’t

say anything; I was across the table

from her and a little diagonal, and all

she did was slide her big glass of milk

over to me. If a picture is worth a

thousand words, a glass of milk is

46 TRUE PEACE

True Father speaking to American members that he had given the mission of earning a Ph.D.

worth a thousand lectures. Father

gave me spirit world and Mother

gave me milk.

Love lessons

Here’s how Father taught me to be

open and public about my love for

my wife. At a gathering of two hundred

or more at East Garden for hoondokhae

with True Parents, out of the

blue, Father called my wife and me

up to the front. You’ve probably seen,

or heard of, Father telling couples to

kiss in front of everyone. That’s exactly

what he told us to do. Being

prim and proper and, like, people

shouldn’t see us kissing, right? We

did a little pro-forma kiss. No, no! Father

got up, Not like that! You have to

really kiss her! Give it all you’ve got!

Well, I’m not the most manly man,

but anyway I picked her up in my

arms and spun her around a few

times as we kissed. I’ve never seen

people do that in front of Father!

Okay, good, sit down, and on with

the hoondokhae. Wow, I thought,

what was that all about? Years later, I

found out. My wife told me that she

had had a dream in which Father was

kissing her and whirling her around.

So, she concluded, what Father was

doing was telling her that I’m in that

position.

Interestingly, it may have been

around that time that Father announced,

at East Garden, that blessed

couples should stop having sex. It

was an announcement that did not

get a lot of publicity. Life lesson:

When you’re having sex, REALLY

HAVE SEX, and if you’re not at that

level, just stop and take the celibacy

track. Both are good.

Oceangoing experiences

Following the MFT assignment, Father

gave me, directly or indirectly,

many missions, and each assignment

had a life lesson. After presenting my

doctoral dissertation to True Parents,

to rounds of applause at a birthday

celebration at East Garden, no sooner

had I sat down than Father announced

my next assignment: national

director of Ocean Church. More

rounds of applause, as I sat flustered

with incredulity that he would do that

to me. Father lovingly helped me

overcome my disbelief by summoning

me to present my acceptance

speech. Life lesson: When God has

you trapped, just enjoy the cheese.

After a summer out on the waves

of Cape Ann, I started to learn the lessons

of the ocean. One day, my boat

actually caught two tuna. We took one

in early, which Father saw as we went

by, and we went out again and doggone

it we caught another. Again we

passed the New Hope, and Father

stood on the deck his mouth ajar and

eyes bulging that we’d caught this

second tuna. That night I got a phone

call from Father’s captain, “Father

said it’s too easy for you.” I did not

catch another tuna all summer. Lesson

learned: It’s not supposed to be easy.

At the end of the summer, at a

leaders meeting on the lawn behind

the East Garden house, Father called

me to give a testimony about the

ocean. As I spoke, standing next to Father,

I was inspired by the Spirit and

just talked away. I realized in a moment

that everything I was saying

was what I had heard Father say

about fishing and the ocean. Lesson

learned: When I unite with Father’s

wild idealism, I find that all his wild

ideas are true!

Moments later I turned to Father

and whispered, “How long should I

talk?” He replied, “You can talk forever.”

Lesson learned: Get in Father’s

space, and you can talk forever.

I soon sat down, and Father commenced

to talking about the next frontier,

Alaska, how amazing it is there,

and on and on about fishing in

Alaska, and I was actually in Father’s

groove imagining it all, when he

shouted to me, “Hendricks, will you

go with me to Alaska?” and I responded

with a sincere, “Yes, Father!”

Then he said, “Okay, you just graduated

Ocean Church. Now you are the

assistant national director of CARP.” I

turned to my right, and sitting there

was Dr. Joon Ho Seuk, national director

of CARP. Lesson learned: Father

has a plan.

Dreams meet reality

Finally, one morning at the East Garden

breakfast table, in 1991, everyone

was ordered go to his hometown.

Mine’s far away, in a small northern

California town. I was ensconced as

vice-president at the national headquarters

and conflicted as to what

God wanted me to do. So, as an elder

was giving a long report in a language

I didn’t know, I closed my eyes

in prayer. Suddenly I dropped deep

down into the space I rarely am allowed

to go, where I met God, where

I met Heung Jin nim, and I asked, “I

know what you want everyone generally

to do, but what do you want me

personally to do?” That’s when I felt a

tug on my sleeve.

Col. Sang Kil Han, sitting next to

me, whispered, “Father is talking to

you.” I straightened up to listen, and

what Father said was, “I want you to

network UTS graduates around the

world and have them organize seminars

for you to teach Divine Principle

to professors and religious leaders.

Spend three years doing that and also

learn Korean, and then report to me.”

He then told the elder to continue the

report that my prayer had so rudely

interrupted! Lesson learned: If you really

want to know, Father will tell

you.

The kicker is that the next day, Father

changed that direction, again

over the breakfast table. He told me to

stay at HQ because a big project was

coming up. I had made my plans, and

Dr. Peter Kim told me, before breakfast,

“What? Father didn’t mean for

you just to pack your bags and go!”

Well, it sure had sounded like that to

me, so there I was staring at my oatmeal

totally confused, and Mother

asked Dr. Kim what was up. Dr. Kim

answered, and Mother and Father

chuckled. Father then told me to stay.

Lesson learned: We take revelations

seriously, but the horizontal God always

has the last word.

Whenever Father directly or indirectly

gave me a mission was a teaching

moment. He was a parent, teacher

and owner telling me, Put yourself

aside. Forget who you are, what you

want, what you think. You are my

son; you want what I want, you think

the way I think. And you know that

I’m right. I will make of you a million

times more than you would ever

dream you could make of yourself. I

will give to the world, through you, a

million times more than you could

ever give by yourself. And eternal life

to boot.

God’s Son & Daughter

God’s Son & Daughter

“Husbands, the woman standing before you is God’s daughter. Also, before she is your wife, she is humanity’s daughter. If you can love her as God’s beloved daughter and a woman whom all humanity loves, then you are qualified to be her husband. Men who do not respect their wives are not true husbands. Do you have such regard for your wife? If not, you should change, even now. Wives, you should not think that your husband only belongs to you. First, he is a son of God; next, he represents all the men in the world. You should become a woman who can love this man more than all humanity can, and love him more than God loves him.

When a woman marries, she should be willing to become like her husband’s left foot, walking in step with him on their family’s path of love for God and all humanity. The husband is like the right foot and the wife is like the left foot. You should not go through life crippled; therefore you should marry. Your couple should not walk with a limp; both the right foot and the left foot should be healthy and strong. If it can walk straight, your couple is destined to live a harmonious married life.”– Rev. Sun Myung Moon, World Scriptures, Page 950

Absolute Love is Needed

“Why is it that women are absolutely needed by men and men by women? It is for the sake of absolute love. Why is absolute love needed? It is in order to possess God. If someone possesses God, God belongs to that person. Within that love is the right to inherit from God, the right to live together with God and the right to participate with God. Therefore within love, God becomes ours, as does everything of God’s creation.”

– Rev. Sun Myung Moon, Cheon Seong Gyeong, Book 5: True Family, 506

Inheriting God’s Love

“The time of marriage is the time when one inherits the love of God. It is also the time we inherit the authority of re-creation. The joy God felt after He created Adam and Eve appears through marriage. After that, the right of dominion commences. Through receiving the Blessing in the realm of perfection, things of the greatest value are inherited. What we call our wedding ceremony therefore refers to the manifestation of love; it refers to our being given the right to create, and it refers to us as subject partner and object partner receiving the right of dominion over each other.

God’s reason for creating man and woman and giving them the three great blessings was to complete a family. The three great blessings—that is, to be fruitful, to multiply and to fill the earth—are not something that an individual can fulfill alone. They can only be fulfilled within a family. Therefore the family is a secure environment in which individuals can establish themselves. It is the ideal foundation for that. No matter how great a man or a woman may be, there must be a father and mother, a husband and wife and brothers and sisters in their family.”

– Rev. Sun Myung Moon, Cheon Seong Gyeong, Book 5: True Family, 506

The Blessing of Marriage

“Marriage can be said to be a ceremony which allows you to open the door of a palace of happiness and enter into it. Therefore, marriage is the biggest event for humankind. Love transcends time and space and it is the greatest thing for humankind. Marriage is a ceremony that reveals and confirms this greatest love.

Why do we term the marriage ceremony “to receive the Blessing?” According to the Principle, if Adam and Eve had not fallen and had become perfected, they would have stood in the position to receive the Blessing. In other words, they were to be the substantial objects of God. Once they were perfected, they would have been objects who totally received love from God as the subject. Through their Blessing, or marriage, God’s love would have appeared in the world.

If there were no marriage, then what is called love would not have started in the human world. Who is the master of that love? We must know that the master is not man or woman, but God. When God’s love is manifested in us, it becomes God’s joy and pride, and we are able to feel this as God’s love.

Love cannot be realized alone; it is only realized through a reciprocal relationship. Therefore, when man tries to realize love, he cannot do it by himself alone. The same can be said about woman. When Adam and Eve unite through love, they are able to receive God’s love for the first time. From this viewpoint, we can understand that we human beings are born from God.” Rev. Sun Myung Moon Blessing & Ideal Family, Chapter 1

Morals and Messages from Harry Potter: Lesson Learned

sketch__harry_potter_by_woshibbdou

by Sammi Vanderstok

Sammi VanderstokWhen I was in college, I took an English course titled “Harry Potter and Global Society” that opened my eyes to the power of literature. I had taken previous English courses and read great works of many authors such as Hemingway, Steinbeck, Dickens, Shakespeare, and Joyce.  But these famous pieces of literature were placed on an ivory pedestal.  Although I knew books could impact culture, I never figured that literature itself could shape my culture or the modern world I lived in.

The fact that we studied such a generationally relevant book that was not only a part of my world and everyday life but also of every other student in that class, made the overarching lessons of literature and its power hit home.

The Harry Potter books are the number one selling book series ever published. The Harry Potter movies are the highest grossing film series of all time. As of last November, total Harry Potter book and movie sales topped $24 billion. Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling is the first author ever to become a billionaire.

I believe her use of myth and folklore is the underlying reason why her Harry Potter series is so wildly successful. Rowling touched a need within the audience for guidance and care and provided it by creating a fantastical world that intersected and interacted with our own.

Myths and folklore are figurative stories about how people within different cultures deal with universal life issues. Every culture possesses them, and they profoundly influence how societies see the world and understand themselves.

Joseph Campbell, a scholar of mythology and specifically of the “hero-quest,” argues that “myths are [the] clues to the spiritual potentialities of the human life. [They show] what we’re capable of knowing and experiencing within.” He says myths “have to do with the themes that have supported human life, built civilizations, and informed religions over a millennia, [they] have to do with deep inner problems, inner mysteries, inner thresholds of passage.”

Rowling uses the language of myth and folklore rather than history to communicate her message. In doing so, she is indicating that moral messages gained through folklore impact people at a deeper level and are more important than the actual history of a society.

In 2008 there was a survey done by a local British newspaper asking which English figures, such as Winston Churchill and Sherlock Holmes, were real and which were fictitious. Surprisingly, the survey revealed that over 50% of the people believed that Sherlock Holmes was real and almost 25% believed that Churchill was mythical. There was also an equal amount of confusion between the real kings of British history, like Richard the Lionheart, and fictitious kings, like King Arthur. This raises the interesting question of how the English, or any other people for that matter, view their own past.

England, of course, is the backdrop for the Harry Potter series. British history, like that of almost every nation, is a mixture of good governance and tyrannical rulers, of national progression and the brutal conquest of foreign lands, and of national identity mixed in with the repression of other cultures. Although there are of course noteworthy characters in England’s past, like Sir Isaac Newton, William Wilberforce (English politician who led the abolition of the slave trade) and William Shakespeare, there are also countless examples of immoral leaders who used their power to a negative effect.

If, for example, a parent was faced with having to use a British historical figure as a role model for their child, how many of them would ever tell their child to be like King Henry VIII? If they did, they would be encouraging violence as a means of control, the misuse of women, and the execution of whoever you don’t like. In many ways, it is much easier to glean life lessons from British legends than to try to find the heroic deeds of past British rulers.

In trying to guide the future generations to make honorable and selfless choices, it would be easier to point youth to myths like the legend of King Arthur and his adventures to create the British Empire than any one historical ruler. One source of  Harry Potter’s appeal is that he can be seen as a modernized King Arthur. The Arthurian Legend with a young protagonist assisted by siblings or friends, a quest to acquire magical artifacts, a supernatural guide, a confrontation between good and evil in which the child plays a crucial role, sounds almost exactly like the story line of the Harry Potter series.

flying_under_the_moon_by_woshibbdou-d3ao37j

I believe that Rowling’s Harry Potter series in some ways is filling the need for moral education of today’s youth. The series’ run-away success cannot simply be attributed to her use of magical wands and interesting characters. Rowling created a fantastical world in her Harry Potter series, complete with locations, history, and cultural nuances. She gave depth to that world by having her characters face issues that people today struggle with. How to co-exist with the “other” (in this case, the non-magical “Muggle” world) and how to purge evils within form the backdrop for the entire Harry Potter series.

People overlook the power of literature, especially children’s literature, and its messages for society. They assume if a book was written for children it must not have much depth or content. This type of thinking has led to oversights not only about the content that the parents are letting their children read, but also about the impact Harry Potter and other youth literature has had on the current generation. J.K. Rowling has deeply influenced the shapers of tomorrow’s culture, yet her series has not received the accolades other influences have had.

Unificationists need to recognize that myths and folklore, expressive of universal truths, are more culture-forming than social inputs. They speak the language of the heart and address the original mind. Applied Unificationism should take into account not just data and the world of the intellect. Transformative social and political policy needs to be infused with an intuitive dimension that informs public thinking.♦

Going Over the Number 70 in Divided Korea ~ Mark Barry Ph.D.

6245-Snap Art

By Mark P. Barry

This year marks 70 years since the division of Korea. From August 1945, the Korean Peninsula has been split between a communist North and democratic South. Unificationists know Reverend Moon foretold, exemplified by a 1985 conference, that the Soviet Union would collapse after going over the number 70, figured from 1917. While it took four more years, highlighted by the Soviet experiment with perestroika and glasnost, President Gorbachev resigned and dissolved the USSR on Christmas Day 1991.

With the Unification movement focused on Vision 2020, it begs the question: “Can the Korean Peninsula be reunified by the end of this decade?” or, at least, “Will the two Koreas develop a peaceful and constructive relationship, ending their decades of hostility and division?”

East Asia knows the special significance of 2015. For Korea, China, and Southeast Asia, it is a year to commemorate their liberation from Japanese military occupation. For Korea, 1945 also marked the end of 40 years of Japanese colonial domination and annexation. For Japan, as it has already experienced in recent months, this year has been a painful reminder of its wartime legacy in Asia, and the expectations of its victims of 70 years ago for Japan to sincerely apologize and take responsibility for the profound harm it caused. It’s also a time when East Asia is reacting to China’s bid for regional hegemony, given it recently became the world’s largest economy.

For Koreans north and south, this year also marks the 15th anniversary of the historic summit meeting between the North’s Kim Jong Il and the South’s Kim Dae Jung. Both leaders are no longer alive, but Kim Dae Jung’s widow is expected to make a goodwill visit to Pyongyang later this month to commemorate the June 2000 summit. Sadly, little progress was made between the two Koreas after that first summit, and in particular since 2010, their relations have gone steadily downhill.

The first commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II took place May 9 in Moscow, where Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, China’s President Xi Jinping, and other world leaders to mark the Allied victory in Europe. Up until the last moment, it was expected that current North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, would attend; but he canceled his trip.

Until April, there was even a slim hope that South Korean president Park Geun-hye would also attend the ceremonies. However, because the United States and other Western states refused to send their leaders to Moscow due to Russia’s aggression in the Ukraine last year, South Korea followed suit. Yet, this was a missed opportunity for the leaders of the two Koreas to meet in a multilateral setting.

Moreover, very meager efforts have been made by both Koreas to communicate and cooperate since the beginning of this year. December 2014 marked three years since Kim Jong Un had been in power following his father’s death. Most experts assess he is clearly in control in the North, has achieved regime stability, and even made marginal improvements in the meager economy. If the South had any doubts it had a potential negotiating partner by then, they should have been dispelled.

January this year was ripe with opportunity for some dramatic moves on the part of the South, which, as the obvious victor in the inter-Korean competition, is in a position to be magnanimous and take bold initiatives. Instead, nothing happened, and as sure as the change of seasons, once we reached February, with the onset of annual US-ROK joint military exercises, the North predictably reacted with vituperation and hostility.

Last year, the South became enmeshed in mounting problems that, in the least, distracted President Park from pursuing meaningful initiatives with the North. Most notably was the Sewol ferry disaster that April in which nearly 300 drowned, mostly high school children. Lax safety regulations and corruption were blamed as the underlying causes of this tragedy that has deeply and negatively affected the perceptions of South Korean youth of their elders and the government.

But it was not simply unexpected domestic problems that diverted President Park from pursuing her trustpolitik policy, which she announced before the U.S. Congress in 2013. No South Korean president has given better speeches on the promise and benefits of Korean unification than President Park (including for a DMZ peace park). From her speeches alone, one can almost touch and taste unification (though her referring to it with the gambling term “jackpot” had negative connotations). She even set up and chairs an advisory Presidential Committee for Unification Preparation.

Yet, they were only words. It seems the time-honored de facto South Korean policy — expecting the DPRK to change first and make major concessions with little-to-nothing in return from the ROK — is alive and well. Having followed North-South Korean relations on a daily basis for 25 years, I see today almost no serious political commitment and determination on the part of the South to improve relations with its northern neighbor. I’ve concluded, much as with Israel’s fraught relationship with the Palestinians, that the status quo is far too convenient and comfortable — for each nation best positioned to make a difference — to risk bold action.

As with Israel and Palestine, the underlying ROK policy toward the DPRK is to manage long-term conflict with the goal of maintaining the status quo, no more. Lip service is paid to a two-state solution by Israel, but it is mere posturing without serious intent. President Park’s government pays eloquent lip service to Korean unification; but fundamentally for domestic policy reasons — fear that genuine efforts to reach out to the North would upend party politics — the South presumes it’s too risky to do more than contain and manage the North Korean problem as it has since the Korean War. For many ROK policymakers, another excuse given is “the North is bound to collapse soon” — a discredited theory since the death of Kim Il Sung over 20 years ago.

From a Unificationist perspective, both places are holy lands: one is the land of the Bible, the other, Korea, is the fatherland of our faith and birthplace of our founders. It would not be surprising that there is a linkage between what happens in the former and what occurs in the latter. A common problem is an unwillingness to alter a pattern that has existed since the end of World War II – despite vastly changed circumstances. “Managing conflict” has a nice ring, but it connotes a belief that there are no good solutions, and more importantly, a lack of desire for real solutions. For both holy lands, some of the intransigence is attributable to extreme nationalism and ethnocentrism; but much is also due to a profound disregard for the welfare of people who either are under your control or your long-suffering neighbor.

rdn_50d246f913a8c

While director of the Europe-Korea Foundation in May 2002, Park Geun-hye (left) met the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang. However, as ROK President, she has not met his heir, Kim Jong Un.

When President Park took office in February 2013, like many, I was elated South Korea could elect its first woman president, much less the daughter of a previous president who lifted the South up from the ashes. Her inauguration took place just months after the passing of Rev. Moon and almost contemporaneous with the first Foundation Day. For Unificationists and non-Unificationists alike, there were high expectations for what President Park would bring. But her first two years in office have been a major letdown in terms of her northern policy, even when compared to her bolder predecessor at the Cold War’s end, President Roh Tae-woo (1988-93).

Perhaps the problem is not the leader but the sociopolitical culture in which he or she works. How can you lead a people to reconcile with an enemy and antagonist when there is lacking a desire by the populace to change their basic reality? It’s a pity the North is looked upon by much of the South’s population as at best a nuisance, or worse, their crazy neighbors to be avoided. Except for the elders who remember the Korean War and its separation of families, younger generations in the South seem to prefer an indefinite division of the peninsula for the sake of their own material well-being.

This year is still young. A low-key civilian inter-Korean event will occur in mid-June to commemorate the first summit. More importantly, on August 15, the date they celebrate as Liberation Day, a higher-level exchange could occur between North and South, although a summit is a longshot. The number 70 only comes once; to ignore 2015’s significance would be foolish for both Koreas. But meaningful, long-lasting change happens only with a clear-cut change of attitude and eventually of policy. Without these, at best, we will see one-time symbolic events observed by the Koreas which will be forgotten in weeks.

To go over the number 70 — for the North to grasp the hand of the South in an act of accommodation, while reducing overbearing Chinese pressure — requires the South actually to extend its hand rather than voice mere rhetoric. The South should passionately and aggressively promote opening of the DMZ border, integration of roads and rail lines, the flow of goods, eventually leading to merger, integration and reunification. Absent real action, instead we might see a prolongation of this 70-year period of peninsular division because a potential partner for peace preferred keeping things just the way they are.♦

Men and women reflect God

“We marry to resemble the form of God. God exists with dual characteristics of masculinity and femininity. He is a unified being in whom both characteristics exist together in harmony. Men and women were created to reflect the dual characteristics of God. Therefore, a man and a woman should come together in complete unity and harmony, become like the seed, and return to the state of the original nature of God.

Men and women are each only half of a whole entity. Therefore women must conquer the world of men and men must conquer the world of women. That is how they are perfected. They come to resemble God by joining their separate manifestations of God’s dual characteristics back together through love. God and people are to unite based on the love between subject and object partners. The reason God has dual characteristics is also because of love. The most precious things for people are their sons and daughters, their brothers and sisters, their spouses and their parents. You cannot perfect your love unless you go through the progression of child, sibling, spouse and parent. That is why you must marry and give birth to sons and daughters. This is a formula. It is a cycle that repeats.”

Rev. Sun Myung Moon, Cheon Seong Gyeong, Book 5: True Family, 503

As Kingfishers Catch Fire

As Kingfishers Catch Fire
As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame;
As tumbled over rim in roundy wells
Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell’s
Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad it’s name:
Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
Deals out that being indoors each one dwells:
Selves – goes itself: myself it speaks and spells,
Crying What I do is me: for that I came.

I say more: the just man justices:
Keeps grace: that keeps all his goings graces:
Acts in God’s eye what in God’s eye he is –
Christ – for Christ plays in ten thousand places,
Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his
To the Father through the features of men’s faces.

Gerard Manley Hopkins, circa 1876

How Can We Go To Heaven?

How can we go to Heaven? We need to live immersed in the love of God. We need to love Him more than Adam and Eve did and we have to love Jesus more than Peter, James and John did. Otherwise we cannot restore the object realm of true love in which God can love us. Only when this is restored will all go well.
Become people who can feed others when they are hungry and help them when they face difficulties. You are born into this world and you need to live in accordance with the rhythm of love in the next world.
Heaven is the place where unfallen people who have received the Blessing on earth in God’s bosom of love, had sons and daughters that God is fond of and grandchildren in whom God can rejoice; and having received His love, enter all together as a family. Paradise , on the other hand, is a place where everyone enters separately, regardless of the affection they shared as a couple or even if they are parents and children. Paradise has nothing to do with the family. Would such a place be Heaven? Heaven is the place where the family attends the parents and where all interaction is centered on God. Could parents live happily inHeaven if their children were making an uproar in hell and screaming that they were about to die? Is such a place the kingdom of heaven?

True Love is Mysterious

“True love is mysterious. The more it is given, the more plentiful it becomes and the more abundant joy it brings. True love possesses power great enough to transform the motivation, process and outcome of human life. We were created to be born in true love, raised in true love, and pass to the next world in true love. That is the reason true love has the greatest and highest value.

Through true love we can be together eternally, see each other eternally, converse with and feel each other eternally, and have nothing except affection for each other. It is one love and yet all people can enjoy it together. If we consider its details ,it is extremely small; if we consider its grandeur, it is extremely large. Immersed in true love, the mere wink of an eye can be sufficient to bring forth a joy so great as to shake heaven and earth; a single smile can make one feel superhuman power. That power is strong enough to change one’s life. If you think you can see it, you cannot; if you think you cannot see it, you can. It is full of mystery.”

-True Father, Pyeong Hwa Gyeong, 589

The fastest action in the world

“The fastest action in the world is not the transmission of electromagnetic waves. It is love. Love travels faster and flies higher than anything in the world. When two people at opposite ends of the Earth love each other, they pull toward each other from across the globe. That is the power of love. In the world of God’s original ideal, a person who has experienced true love has the ability and authority to possess instantly anything God wants.”

True Mother’s Christmas Speech

My beloved children, blessed children of the Unification Church and Ambassadors for Peace: I’m delighted to see you. Today we are celebrating Christmas. When we celebrate Christmas, we should think about God’s providential history and God’s heart. Whenever I think about God’s providence, my heart is heavy. In the world there are parents, and they celebrate their children’s birthday; they hope their children will grow and be healthy and be blessed. They pray for their success. If that’s the case with earthly parents, what was the case with God’s heart when He created the universe? He had a dream and a hope for the universe. When God created human beings, He was full of that dream; He was so excited.
We learn from the Divine Principle that God wanted to give human beings complete authority. He wanted them to grow well. But what happened? The mistake that Adam and Eve made was so incredible; it brought such terrible suffering to human beings and to God. Human history became a history of suffering and grief. But God could not abandon humankind.

God has been searching for and longing for human beings. You, as children of God, have you ever felt that kind of pain? How could He abandon human beings? God’s pain is a field of bitter sorrow. Human beings are so ignorant; God had to raise them up. Through the Bible you know that it took four thousand years to send the Messiah. God lived such a sorrowful, painful existence, but He could not help but try and try again to recover human beings.

Two thousand years ago the people of Israel wanted to find the unfallen lineage. God wanted to send His begotten son, Jesus, but, until He could, how many ordeals did God have to suffer? You clergy members must have read the Bible many times. Have you ever really comforted God’s heart? God finally sent His begotten son, but what was this cross that He had to bear? Why was this begotten son killed? To have this happen after four thousand years of preparation—do you really understand what it means, you ministers who are here? It was humankind’s mistake.
God’s heart was full of bitter sorrow. People in the world are celebrating at Christmastime with joy. However, how many people really understand the situation of God? When I really think of it, my heart is painful.

We should become children who are able to comfort God’s heart. I’m sorry that I cannot control my emotions. I already said before, we are the people who know True Parents. But Jesus, who came two thousand years ago as the begotten son, should have met the begotten daughter. The Roman Empire was already prepared to be the realm of kings. It was already prepared to enable Jesus’ message to be spread throughout the world. But two thousand years of suffering have passed since then. Jesus promised that he would return, and he promised the Feast of the Lamb. That means he wanted to restore humankind as God’s children. That’s the providence God wants to carry out. Yet, for two thousand years there were a lot of problems in Christian history. They could be settled only in the 16th century. That’s when the Bible was translated to English and to other languages, and that’s how Christianity could spread.

Christians wanted to be free from the conventional norms, and the Pilgrim Fathers of America wanted to be free from their country, especially from their national religion, and they wanted to come to a New World. They thought of God first. Before they built homes for themselves, first they built a church; then, for the sake of the future generations, they built a school, and then finally they built their own homes. That’s the indemnity course that humankind should follow. But as human beings they made a lot of mistakes. Democracy came from Christianity. But communism also came from Christianity. However, God promised to send the Messiah, the Lord of the Second Advent. God continued His preparations to send the Lord of the Second Advent. It started from the Roman Empire and on to England. The British Empire was so huge, it was said that the “sun never sets” on it. It expanded with the Bible. Its purpose was to receive the Lord of the Second Advent.

What we have to understand is that we are fallen human beings who could not align with God. We did not have a clear center. We have a lot of hidden stories. Still, God sent the Lord of the Second Advent whom He had prepared. Through many difficulties, finally the True Parents of humankind were sent.

There are many problems in the world. Religious problems, racial problems and more. But no one can solve the problems. Can they be solved by the president? Can they be solved by the United Nations? They tried. They could not solve these problems.  They can be solved only by True Parents, whom God loves. They can solve these problems. Do you understand? Furthermore, today throughout the world there are four major religions, but God has been leading the providence centering on humanity.

Jesus said that he was the only begotten son of God, and he talked about the father-son relationship. But in order for him to be the parents of humanity, there need to be a mother as well as a father. We know that.

We are living beyond the Completed Testament Age and in the era of Cheon Il Guk. We need to share that with the world by bringing others out of the Old and New Testament Ages.

I told the Cranes Club that their lineage is like pure water, thanks to their parents having received the Marriage Blessing. And the fallen world is like muddy water. But even pure water can be muddied. You should bring 7 billion people back to God. You need to educate people about True Parents. That’s why you became blessed families. Do you understand? You have that responsibility.

How could nations fight if they were dedicated to one set of parents? How could they be focused only on themselves? Only when you are centered on True Parents can you really prosper. There are many Unificationists. If you move forward with one goal with your brothers and sisters, you can be great. Do you want to do that?

True Parents’ motto is to live for the sake of others. If you can do that, you can unify the world. You can be a true parent as well. Then we can build the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. If you want to do that, you should work very hard. You also need to become tribal messiahs, to restore your families. That should not be a very big job; True Parents are trying to restore the seven billion people of the world.

You can be patriots. You should become the kind of children who participate in this historic world. Then your life will be very honorable. Just keep the frame of mind that the lives of seven billion people are in your hands. How can you be comfortable knowing this? You should do your very best; you should practice the words that you already believe. I hope you can understand and act upon this. Please think about the grievances and bitter sorrow of all people. We should become victors. We should not live only for our life on the earth; rather we should become victors for our eternal life in the spirit world. I hope you can be the kind of people who will do that. If you can, you will be remembered for eternity!

The Heroines of Christmas

Over the next two weeks the story of Christ’s birth will be read in churches across America and around the world. We all know the familiar Bible verses: Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:18 – 2:28; the Magnificat (Luke1:46 -55); the Nunc Dimittis (Luke 2:29-32); John 1:1-14 and others. They will be the topic of a million sermons.

Few if any will read the almost tedious lineage of Jesus given in Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38, yet these also tell an amazing story, that of God’s work through history to prepare for the birth of Jesus.

Jesus’ lineage is revealed in Matthew going through David’s son Solomon while Luke goes through David’s son Nathan. Both end in Joseph, but they name different fathers for Joseph. Some suggest that this was because Luke went through the male lineage while Matthew’s version is through Mary’s lineage ending with her husband Joseph.

Most significant in Matthew is the mention of five remarkable women in Jesus’ lineage. Tamar, who posed as a prostitute to her father in law so she could continue the lineage;  Rahab a foreign prostitute who sheltered the Hebrew spies in Jericho; Ruth who offered herself to Boaz, sleeping at his feet, and became the grandmother of David; Bathsheba who committed adultery with David and finally Mary, a pregnant teen out of wedlock.  Two of these women were not even Israelites.

What, if anything, do they have in common?
Why would scripture only preserve the names of the women in Jesus’ lineage involved in what appears to be decadent activity?  Why does Tamar’s story consume an entire chapter?

One thing we notice is that they all risked their lives. Tamar risked her life to continue the lineage of Judah; Rahab risked her life to protect the Hebrew spies in Jericho, God’s chosen people, allowing their lineage to settle and flourish; Ruth risked her life lying at the feet of Boaz to provide descendants to her husband’s family lineage; When Bathsheba, married to David’s chief general, Uriah, committed adultery with David Bathsheba also risked her life. God punished David for killing Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah, by killing his first child from this tryst. However Bathsheba’s second child from David was Solomon, blessed by God to be a great king and again the direct lineage of Jesus.

Finally there is pregnant Mary, paternity of the child unknown.  Imagine how it was for Mary at the time, before the birth of Jesus and as he grew up: Who would believe this pregnant teen if she said God was the father of her child? Remember these people were not Christians, they were strict Jews, and even thirty three years later they rejected the notion that he was the Messiah. They saw a pregnant teen and the punishment for fornication or adultery was stoning to death. Like the others, Mary risked her life to conceive the Messiah.

What does God want to accomplish through these women?
From Tamar’s perspective, she undoubtedly had the deep longing to be a mother and she was aware of her biological clock ticking. She knew firsthand  the scorn that barren women received.  She was desperate. She probably prayed with tears to God, asking for a child through whom the lineage could continue. She had no idea of course of God’s work in her future lineage, nevertheless she must have felt this was crucially important, not just for her own desires of motherhood but her conscience also told her that maintaining Judah’s lineage was her important life mission. She was willing to pretend to be a prostitute, risking her life to fulfil this mission. Through all this I feel she must have touched God’s heart. In the story of Tamar I feel that God has a very intense interest in seeing a seed from the tribe of Judah in the womb of Tamar. Why? From Tamar’s womb, 40 generations later, will come the birth of Christ, God’s Son, the Creator’s true lineage.

God seems to be crazy about lineage. First he makes Adam and Eve in His image and the very next thing He does is blesses them to be fruitful (mature), and multiply. He tells Abraham and others that their descendants will be as countless as the stars in the sky or grains of sand on the beach.
In Malachi 2:15 “Has not the Lord made them one? In flesh and spirit they are His. And why one? Because He was seeking godly offspring.” Here God reveals His motivation for creation that was suspended due to the fall. Here and in Genesis 1:27 – 28 God gives us the very purpose for our creation.

God created Adam and Eve for the fulfilment of love. He intended for Adam and Eve to reach perfection and become the embodiments of love in complete union of husband and wife becoming one flesh. On that basis, He would have come and dwelt with them and become the Parent of true love for all humanity, as is prophesied in the last chapters of Revelation.  Joyful sex is very much a part of God’s plan. He wants to be a part of the conjugal sexual relationship, but between prudery and promiscuity we have denied Him and shut Him out of our bedrooms.

God’s Lineage
What defines the parent child relationship? Three things: Love, life and lineage. We love Jesus because he first loved us. God created us out of absolute love to be His sons and daughters. Next is life. How shall we live to return joy to Him? In other words, how shall we live to become children of God, people whom God delights to call “My son,” or “My daughter,” because He sees in us a divinity equal to His own?

In this melting pot of America and to some extent throughout the western world we have lost the value and importance of lineage. Yet lineage is more important than life and more important than love. Life and love come together to create lineage. Lineage cannot be established if either life or love is missing. Therefore, among the three qualities that define the parent-child relationship with God—love, life and lineage—lineage is the fruit.

God’s lineage was lost by Adam and Eve. Through the fall they adopted Satan as a false father. Their descendants were stained with original sin so that Cain murdered his brother and by the time of Noah God grieved that He had made man. We see proof of this evil lineage when John the Baptist calls the Pharisees “you brood of vipers” (Mt.3:7) as does Jesus in Mt. 23:23. Jesus also tells them they are of their father the Devil (Jn. 8:44).

God’s plan to remove our sinful nature and restore His ideal, sinless world, the Kingdom of Heaven, was to send us a new sinless Adam. To do this he first had to work through people in history to reverse the fall of man and lay the conditions of overcoming Satan, so that such a sinless son could be born. This son would grow to become one with God and then raise up a sinless Eve and establish a True Family through whom we could all be reborn back into God’s lineage.

In the Fall of man Lucifer took Eve and had an unprincipled sexual relationship with her. This is the Fall that brought humanity into a relationship with Satan. In the course of restoration God took these five women from the fallen world and in a reversal of the fall of Eve put them in the position of prostitutes and adulterers and through their actions brought them into God’s dominion, thus restoring His lineage so that His son could be born.
What more perfect way to attend God than by producing His lineage?

CHRISTMAS

Madonna and child

Like many of you I love Christmas. I will refrain from sharing the many wonderful memories I have, but let you revel in yours. It truly seems to be a time of peace, goodwill to all men; a time of family gatherings and love; a time of giving and a holy time when carols lift our spirits to jubilant heights. In this sad fallen world Christmas gives us a moment of experiencing the heaven that was meant to be and the hope that the ideal world is coming.

All because over two thousand years ago a baby was born in a cowshed outside a small dirty village in the Roman province of Judea. Externally this baby looked and acted like any other baby. But this was not just any infant, in this moment the Creator of the universe had brought a new beginning to humankind.

Ever since the first children of Adam and Eve, Cain, Abel and Seth, humans were born with a false nature, defective character traits pulling us towards sin. Now, for the first time since the birth of Adam and Eve themselves, a child was born without Satan’s seed, a child created by the Heavenly Parent in His image, a child who when fully grown and matured in God’s love, could bring us back to our eternal Heavenly Parent and make us children of the Living God, brothers and sisters in the family of God.

Today we see the fruits of that life. Just for a moment reflect on what life would be like today if Jesus had not been born. Consider how much of Western civilization would not exist. How the whole world is better because of him and beyond that consider the eternal world and realize through that one birth we have hope of attaining eternal life.

Merry Christmas

Can the United Nations become relevant in achieving world peace?

As civil war grows in the Ukraine and a barbaric gang expands its power in Syria and Iraq the United Nations seems impotent, unable to act or even suggest a path to peace. While some of the agencies within the U.N., such as UNESCO and WHO do laudable work, the political power seems so mired in self-centered national interests and world politics that it is unable to act or even give a unified voice. The United Nations is badly in need of reform.

Rev. Moon saw this many years ago and came up with a solution. To this end he created the Universal Peace Federation (U.P.F.) in 2005, almost a decade ago, as a new international peace organization. He said that at the same time we should reform the U.N. by promoting the establish within it of an upper house, a peace council that would have the same rank as the current Security Council but be free from “Satan’s realm” (national interests, corporate and individual interests etc.)

Rev. Moon said, “This council would be a legislative body consisting of religious leaders from around the globe, under the protection of God. I am saying that we have to establish a peace council that will work not for the interests of nations, as the U.N. presently does, but for humanity’s true welfare and peace, based on a perspective that goes beyond national interests.”

Michaelmas

Summer is in its last throes and the autumnal equinox is upon us. My daughter is back at school, evenings are shorter and cooler; leaves are tinting and once more change is upon us. AutumnWhen I was at school in England this was called the Michaelmas term, after the Feast of St. Michael and all angels which falls on September 29th.
St. Michael is the leader of the heavenly host who defeat Satan in the war of heaven mentioned in Rev. 12:7-9
“Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”
In this time when Russia is invading Ukraine, Assad is attacking his own people in Syria and ISIL is using modern warfare to establish a barbaric medieval state in Syria and Iraqi t seems strangely appropriate; It seems we are in the midst of that war.
LetSt. Michael us be assured that St. Michael and his angels will win the victory. They have a new commander in heaven, True Father, who ascended two years ago and together with his sons and Jesus are rallying all the Heavenly Host.
We must also rally to the call to speak out for truth and righteousness, to live day by day with heavenly desire to overcome the evil of this world with the power of true love. Then the Lord will come with his Holy Myriads

“And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. 12 Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

Rev. 12:13-16  “And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth.”

Gods hope for America

The “God’s Hope for America road trip” spanned 43 days from June 22 to August 3, 2014, following the footsteps of Father Moon’s first visit to America (1965); part of his world tour creating holy grounds in many nations. The buses traveled to the 55 cities in 48 states where Father Moon created Holy Grounds.  It’s purpose was to remember, revive and reimagine God’s Hope for America. They arrived at the Idaho Holy Ground in Julia Davis Park, Boise at 8:00 on Friday August 1st. A service of songs and prayers of gratitude and for America and Idaho to receive a spiritual revolution was held; followed by a ceremony to recognize pastors and the men and women of God, His workers, in the Treasure Valley, a group photo and gathering to fellowship over coffee, pastries and doughnuts

Rev. Moon’s Words on God Bless America

From Yankee Stadium (1974) and Washington Monument (1976) speeches

Today, America and Christianity together must take up the sacred task of world restoration. Now is the time to beat swords into ploughshares (Is. 2:4, Micah 4:3), to heal our families and ultimately fulfill the mission of establishing the Kingdom of God on Earth.
“One World Under God” is the unchanging, eternal and absolute desire of God. This goal will be realized. As Isaiah says “I have purposed it and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed it I will also do it.” Isaiah 46:11

When all men worship one God as Father, accept Christ and uphold an absolutely God-centered way of life, then the dwelling of God will be with men. It will be only a matter of time to see the Kingdom of God here on earth; yet, in order to accomplish this goal, the harmony of religions towards this one purpose is the first and essential task.
The United States of America, transcending race and nationality, is already a model of the unified world. She must realize that the abundant blessings which God has been pouring upon this land are not just for America, but are for the children of God throughout the world. Upon the foundation of world Christianity, America must exercise her responsibility as a world leader and the chosen nation of God.parental love photo shanker

America’s greatness and pride stem from God. With Him, America deserves the blessing and can remain as the mightiest nation. With God, we can preserve our dignity and the leadership of the world. If we allow God to leave America, however, this nation will decline; it will be subjugated by satanic hands. If this happens, the future of America will be dismal, tragic. When God’s blessing is great, and one forsakes God’s will, God’s punishment is equally great.

George Washington said: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity; Religion and Morality are indispensable supports…..reason and experience both forbid us to expect, that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle”.

Today, America is plagued with problems: racism, family breakdown, juvenile delinquency, drugs and all kinds of immorality. Christianity is declining. Secularism and materialism are rising. It has become a woman’s legal right to kill her unborn child. These are not just America’s problems; they are the problems of religious people; they are the problems of God Himself.

At this crossroads of human history, we must listen to the calling of God. God prepared America for 200 years. This is the time for awakening. America must accept her global responsibility. America is a great nation, a godly nation, and the central nation in God’s Providence. She is now in her third century. She must not disappoint God.
Armed with God’s spirit and truth, she must revive her families, free the Communist world, bring mutual respect, love and peace to all the children of Abraham and at last, build the Kingdom of God here on earth. God has chosen America as the flag bearer. America must rise up.
Today!

Tomorrow may be too late.

To inspire America to sacrifice herself for the sake of the world, to inspire America to work towards “One World Under God”, forty one years ago God summoned Reverend Moon to this country to proclaim God’s new revelation of what the God-centered family, church and nation should be like. And in particular, God called him as a firefighter in a burning building to lead the young people of America, the leaders of tomorrow, away from drugs, sex and rock n’ roll and back to God.

Welcome

Sawtooth mountain lakeWelcome to Boise Family Church, a part of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification

Our vision is to see “God’s kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven”

Our mission is to create “One Family under God” through the Divine Principle of living for the sake of others and through God’s ideal of the family

Revelations 21:3-7 reads:

“Look, God’s dwelling place is now among the people and he will dwell with them.

They will be his people and God himself will be with them and be their God.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of things has passed away.

I am making everything new;  these words are trustworthy and true

Let the one who is thirsty come and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life

He who overcomes shall inherit all things , And I will be his God and he shall be my Son.”
